BBC TV will point their cameras on a bike move

Puppet parade bike move

[Scene from a
recent bike move.]

A producer with the BBC has been poking around the bike scene recently. I heard she was putting together a story about Portland’s sustainability and wanted to feature something about bikes.

At first she mentioned wanting to talk with someone who makes their living by bike but I encouraged her to delve into the wonderful world of Portland bike moves. I sent her links to my reports and photos on this proud local tradition and she was instantly convinced.

Luckily, there happens to be someone needing to move on the same day the producer had available. So that’s it…the BBC will be in town on August 5th to get some footage of a local bike move. Wow, international exposure for gloriously fun and efficient bike-power. Does it get any better that?

If you’d like to help with this bike move, check out the details here.

If you want to see what a bike move is all about, check out this Bike Move video from Clarence Eckerson of BikeTV and visit the official Move by Bike page on the ShiftToBikes.org.

NOTE: We love your comments and work hard to ensure they are productive, considerate, and welcoming of all perspectives. Disagreements are encouraged, but only if done with tact and respect. If you see a mean or inappropriate comment, please contact us and we'll take a look at it right away. Thank you.

I’m also looking forward to Kristen’s Bike Move on Saturday, because she’s moving her chickens. Chickens! Details for both moves:

    5035 NE 23rd Ave
    Sat 7/29, 10:00a
    kristensaxton [at] yahoo dawt com
moving from about NE 23rd / Alberta to about N Albina / Holman

Kristen is moving, her chickens are too! All by bike! She’s moving to the Peninsula Park Commons, it’s going to be ridiculously fun and amusing, *squawk*. She has lots of stuff, so tell your friends and feel free to show up even if you don’t have a trailer or cargo-bike. We’ll tie stuff to your handlebars, or something, *cluck*. The move will be a fairly short distance and more or less downhill, *rawwwkk*. Pre-move doughnuts and a BBQ afterward *happy clucking*.

    75 NE Going St
    Sat 8/5, 6:00p
    Rachel 510-867-9766
moving from 75 NE Going to 3964 N Michigan

BBC (yes, the British news agency) is covering Portland in a feature on local self-reliance, and wants to film our amazing local phenomenon of the Bike Move. Here’s your chance at 15 minutes of fame on international TV (of course if you don’t want to be on TV, you won’t be).

This move downhill, and very short. Then we’ll have tea and crumpets, fish and chips, curry for the vegan crowd, garden salad, who knows what else.

I will have two extra trailers, so if you don’t have one but want to help, let me know. Contact me off-list with any questions. I’d love an RSVP so I know how much food to make, but I usually make a lot, so if you decide at the last minute to come, great!

  • […] And remember my story about the BBC (yes, the BBC) wanting to come to Portland to film one? Well, they came and produced a big story for their Newsnight program. The story was mostly about our transportation system on the whole, but if you watch the entire video, you’ll catch a bit of a recent bike move and an interview with local cyclist Rachel Freifelder.
