TriMet will change policy after concerns raised over ‘Al M’ videos

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

TriMet has made a policy change in light of complaints about a bus operator who made videos of himself and his passengers — sometimes while driving — and then posted them on this blog.

The issue surfaced after I published a video statement by bus operator Al Marguiles. In the comments of that story, Marguiles (posting as “Al M”) engaged other readers and encouraged them to visit his blog to watch videos about people who bike and about BikePortland.

Vancouver Ave bridge project: How’s it treating you?

“Since the Vancouver Ave bridge has been out I have been unable to find a safe route to work.”
— Brian Tang in a posting to SeeClickFix

A construction project that has completely closed the Vancouver Avenue bridge over the Columbia Slough in North Portland is causing headaches and is highlighting the poor north/south biking options in the surrounding area.

As I reported back in April, the project began in May and the bridge closure is expected to last through the end of December. In the comments to that story several people expressed concerns about the poor bikeway quality on the proposed detours* and there were questions about why PBOT would do this project during the summer months.

New music video features Portland tall bike jousters

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

Still from video.
-Watch it below-

First it was The Flaming Lips, now it’s LCD Soundsystem who has looked to Portland’s colorful, bike-riding characters for a music video.

I heard about this being filmed just a few weeks ago and word on the street was that every local freak bike builder was there. It’s a gorgeous look “into the culture of bike jousting” with a lot of familiar faces including Irondelle/gravity biker/chariot war champion Emily O’Connor, jousting legend and former Alberta Clown House performer Rabbit, the inimitable Dingo the Clown, Hammercising acro-balancer Dutch, and many others. The song is “Drunk Girls” (Holy Ghost! Remix) and the piece was directed by Daniel Garcia. Watch it below…

BikePortland on the radio: Listen to the latest spots

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

As I mentioned back in March, I’ve got a great partnership going with the folks over at 94.7 FM ‘Alternative Portland’. Thanks to sponsorships from Better World Club (the original bicycle roadside assistance people!) and Bike n Hike, messages about biking are being heard on the radio throughout the day.

For those of you that haven’t heard them yet, I’ve uploaded the latest spots for your listening enjoyment. Each one is 60 seconds total, split between the sponors’ ad and my bike-related message.

Pedalpalooza: Much more than bike fun

Hammercise Ride-12

(Photos © J. Maus)

The 17 days of Pedalpalooza officially came to an end at yesterday’s Multnomah County Bike Fair. With nearly 300 free events in just over two weeks and tens of thousands of people taking part, Pedalpalooza — which is in its ninth year of existence, depending on how you count — is well on its way to becoming a proud Portland tradition right up there with the Rose Festival.
