Last Thursday on Alberta

Posted by Jonathan Maus (Editor) on August 26th, 2008 at 10:53 am

There will be a special bike art show and a performance by the Sprockettes at Last Thursday this week.

The bike art and performance (flyer below) will be at the Breeze Block (1011 NE Alberta, also home to the Bye and Bye).

And did I mention… no cars!

How much did car-free Last Thursday cost the city?

The O's S. Renee Mitchel is frequently a whining, antagonistic, meddling columnist, but occasionally she's got some realistic information to consider. In her Sunday, Sept 1st column, she talks about the bill for police officers hired to patrol the party element at Last Thursday/Alberta. Here follows a couple paragraphs from her article relating to what she has to say about that:

"Last week, the Police Bureau paid $4,371 to hire two sergeants and 10 uniformed officers to work the event. Cops issued 11 alcohol-related tickets, reminded some folks to be respectful and then cleared the street after the agreed-upon closing time of 10 p.m.

"For next year, we'd like to transition more volunteers into running the event and fewer police officers," notes police Lt. Bill Walker. "The focus (recently) has been on getting the business community and the neighborhood to take control and responsibility for their event." S.Renee Mitchell/

On another of editor Maus's stories on the subject of Alberta Last Thursday, I read that a non-profit, with Dingo Dismal as a member, was set up to cover these kinds of expenses. Any word on their progress in that area?

Here's the link to the article....hope it works!
