Chris Smith to submit 1,000th contribution today

Transportation and neighborhood activist Chris Smith, who began his run for City Council back in September, plans to submit his 1,000th, $5 contribution to the Auditor’s office later today.
Smith, who was given the moniker “Citizen Smith” by the Portland Tribune, needs to have at least 1,000 valid contributions turned in by January 31st in order to qualify for $150,000 of public financing for his campaign.
To make sure he qualifies, Smith says he’ll shoot for 1,100 - 1,150 total contributions and will throw an “Over-the-Top” party this Sunday to help reach that goal.
The party is planned for Sunday (1/27) evening from 6-9pm at the Lucky Lab Beer Hall in Northwest Portland (1945 NW Quimby).
“I’m inviting my supporters to come celebrate our success in raising our $5 contributions,” Smith said in a statement issued today, “but I am also asking them to bring in additional forms they have collected and invite their friends to come out and meet me, to consider making a contribution.”
Smith is vying for the seat on Portland’s City Council that was previously occupied by Commissioner Sam Adams, who is running for mayor. Smith is likely to face stiff competition for this spot from Amanda Fritz, Charles Lewis, John Branam, and Jeff Bissonnette.

...or Gresham. I was cut off when they drew the line between Gresham and Portland last year. Ya'll are going to have to pull for Sam, Chris and Jim without me. Meanwhile I should pay attention to what is going on in Gresham, the only city in the region to vote down additional funding for schools that are way beyond capacity and behind on maintenance.

David Douglas voted against bonds to build a much needed elementary school. Gresham isn't the only one to say no to education.

Chris and all his supporters might want to get a few extra signatures to make sure the Elections office doesn't disquailify too many. After the Golivan/Boyles debacle,there is extra attention to signatures being paid. I know this because my signature was disqualified as not matching the one they have on record. ( this was for another candidate)

EXCITING NEWS: Chris Smith's Over-The-Top Party will feature performances by "The Greasy Chain String Band," an old-timey quartet who love bikes and banjos.
Joe's right. Handing in 1000 forms, or even 1050 is taking a real risk. These things get disqualified for all kinds of reasons. They're real sticklers! So, for the sake of those you're contributing to, fill out those forms carefully and don't assume that candidates who are barely over, like Chris, are in the clear yet.
C'mon out on Sunday for Chris' party and bring a friend who hasn't contributed yet.
