Team Awesome says ‘Thanks for pedaling’

On my way into lunch at Redwing Cafe in Southeast Portland today I noticed cards hanging from the bikes parked out front.

Upon further inspection this is what I found:

Thanks for pedaling-2.jpg

Thanks for pedaling-1.jpg

Following the link on the back I found the Team Awesome website. I found out that the cards are the work of Portlanders Van Gist and Sam Peifer. The two friends say they made the cards to spread a message of thanks to all those who choose to pedal.

I also learned that Van and Sam are about to leave for a fixed-gear bike tour across the USA. According to their site they’ll leave Portland on December 9th and the tour will take them through eight states and will cover over 4,500 miles.

They say the main goal of the tour will be “to promote cycling as a beautiful and efficients means of transportation” and that they’ll be making appearances along the way and posting video updates on their blog.

Check them out at Teamawsm.com.

So, do the hipster types just get their buddies together and call themselves a \”team?\” As in \”Team Awesome\” or whatever…? I\’m struggling to understand the \”team\” concept here.

Anyway, you\’re welcome. It was my pleasure, really.

And when you guys get to my hometown, Bay St Louis, Mississippi, be sure to tell everyone Chris says hello.

Q: How many hipsters does it take to make a team?
A: You mean you don\’t know?

But seriously, in answer to your first question: yes. Having such an awesome moniker gains admission to awesome hipsterdom via the affectation of \”irony\” – the lingua franca, or coin of the realm if you will. We\’re a team, but we\’re not! Awesome!

I applaud the awesome moxie of Team Awesome though. I wish you nothing but an awesome time so I will preemptively refer you to the most awesome: http://www.floridaortho.com. I hope your knees are awesome as well. 53 x 15 – totally awesome gearing.

I think the CCC can hook you guys up with some awesome children\’s helmets (they have awesome street cred, totally awesome).

Keep Portland weird, or awesome, I guess.

Love,
pushkin the o.a. (original awesome).

I was at Redwing three times today, a most excellent place. I saw the Team Awesome tags but didn\’t approach the bike to see what it was. Great idea. Thanks for letting us know. It wasn\’t my bike that was tagged, but the message will make whatever is falling in that head wind out there (I can\’t imagine how it wouldn\’t be frozen) all that more pleasant.

To paraphrase Elwood Blues;

It\’s 4605 miles across the country, we\’ve got a full pack of PBR stickers, half a pack of vegan chips, it\’s dark and we\’re wearing cotton.

Good luck guys.
