PDOT needs volunteers to count bicyclists
Posted by Jonathan Maus (Editor-in-Chief) on July 9th, 2007 at 1:28 pm
PDOT is looking for a few good volunteers to help them with a very important project. They need your help to count bicyclists at various locations throughout the city.
Last summer, over 50 volunteers helped with the count and the result was a 21-page report (view results and download here) that according to city bike coordinator Roger Geller is “invaluable information for the city”.
In order to volunteer, there will be a one-hour training session (with free pizza and drinks) from 5:00 to 6:00pm on July 17th in Room B of the Portland Building (1120 SW 5th Avenue).
If you’re interested, RSVP to bicyclemasterplan@pdxtrans.org.

Jonathan, thanks for posting!
Actually, we're looking for a LOT of good volunteers. We want to do counts at more than 80 locations city-wide. It'd be great if we could do the counts more than once at each location.
The counts are relatively light-lifting. All you'll need will be a pen, a clipboard, a count sheet, and two hours to give at the afternoon rush hours (4-6 pm; some counts are during morning rush hours 7-9 am).
It's a great way to contribute to one of the most important aspects of the city's bicycle programs: providing the data to demonstrate our effectiveness.

So now we know the time of day - how about a set of dates?

Cecil et al:
Time to do the counts is relatively flexible. We ask people to count Tuesday, Wednesdays, or Thursdays sometime between mid-July and mid-September.

Is July 17 the only available training date? I'd love to do this but will be out of town then...

Isn't September the commute-to-work challenge? Wouldn't doing counts then skew the numbers?

I'm game. I can do Wednesdays after work or anyday before work...
