Bike gang documentary coming to Portland

Posted by Jonathan Maus (Editor) on June 7th, 2007 at 8:46 am

Portland is home to more than a few bike gangs. We’ve got:

  • The Belligerantes: Mostly a social club, they ride classic Schwinns with ape-hanger bars and banana seats.
  • The Zoobombers: Everyone knows what they do.
  • Chunk 666: Mutant bike builders preparing for “car”mageddon.
  • Dropout Bike Club: They build all types of bikes (tall, swing, spin, mini, etc…) and have weekly rides.

And there are likely more that I don’t know about.

But we’re not the only place with bike gangs. From Amsterdam to Minneapolis to New York City, cyclists have created intricate subcultures bound together by a love of bikes.

When two New York City filmmakers get under the seams of Brooklyn’s hardcore Black Label Bike Club, the result was a documentary of their engrossing two-year experience titled B.I.K.E. (Be Inclusive Kill Exclusivity).

The movie will get a Portland screening on June 16th at 11:00pm. Gabriel Amadeus Tiller put together the screening and he says the plan is to meet downtown at the North Park Blocks (near the Elephant off of Burnside) and “go on a mystery ride to a mystery location” to watch the movie.

Here’s the flyer Gabe made for the screening:

The flyer for the Portland screening. Created by Gabriel Amadeus Tiller Nick Chatfield-Taylor. Download original.

Read more about the movie and watch the trailer on the B.I.K.E. website.

Thanks for the write-up! I have to note, though that I did not do the flyer, however. It's done by Nick Chatfield-Taylor who also shot the awesome matt and kim videos.

Don't forget about Portland's only all-girl bike crew/dance team, The Sprockettes!

Dropout Bike Club rides are 3rd Friday of the month, not weekly. Thank you for mentioning us.

The full title of the movie is Be Inclusive Kill Exclusivity.

You can buy it on their website.

And locally, you can buy Filmed by Bike DVDs at the Multnomah County Bike Fair for a discount, or online year rounde.
