This morning was the annual Bike to Work celebration hosted by the Lloyd District Transportation Management Assocation (LDTMA). In addition to free massages, bike tune-ups, food, coffee, and other helpful resources for bike commuters, the event marked the debut of the Lloyd Bikettes.

The Bikettes are LDTMA Program Manager Moira Green and volunteer Sandi Deodato. Their inspiring performance brought the house down. Hoping to encourage folks to joing the TMA’s Bike Committee, they courageously donned traffic safety vests and sang and danced their hearts out to Village People’s classic YMCA song.

It’s hard to capture it with words and photos, but they had a full routine, complete with thrusting bike pumps into the air, energetic leg kicks, and original lyrics (I can’t get “It’s fun to join the Lloyd District TMA” out of my head). The crowd responded with their utmost appreciation. Nice work ladies!

I also got the chance to meet the Executive Director of the LDTMA, Rick Williams. He’s been at the helm for over a decade and has played a big role in the great success the Lloyd District has had in encouraging biking, walking and transit.

In his tenure, they have gone from a bike commute mode share of 1.5% to 4% and Williams says they’re pushing hard for their goal of 10%. The Lloyd District is home to 21,000 employees and Williams said the next step is reaching out to them with individualized marketing efforts.

He is already in talks with Linda Ginenthal from PDOT and hopes to scale her successful SmartTrips program for the Lloyd District.

There were lots of familiar faces in the crowd.

I bumped in ODOT planner Joyce Felton. We last heard from Joyce back in August when she was working to improve the N Bryant St. bike and pedestrian bridge. This morning, she was proudly showing off her beautiful new Rivendell Bleriot.

Teacher by day and Sprockette by night, Maggie Michaels, was on her way to work at Benson High School. She was looked stylish as always aboard her custom commuter bike, built by friend and local builder Joseph Ahearne.

It was great to see everyone. I hope you liked my little speech (I thought it was cute how they made Commissioner Sam Adams and I sit on this little bench with our names on it).

Here are a few more photos of the event.

You forgot to mention that the massage was provided free of charge to commuters by East West College, A Professional School of Massage and Spa Training located right in the Lloyd District. We have lots of students and employees that regularly bike to school and work! Bike commute day was an awesome way to kick of the Biking season.

Thanks!
