Cafe "especially" encourages bike commuters

In what is becoming something of a regular feature, here’s yet another Portland business doing its part to encourage two-wheeled transportation.
Laughing Planet Cafe, a much loved local food joint with three Portland locations, is expanding into Woodstock in March and needs more help.
I noticed this want ad on the door of their Mississippi Street location today. At the end of the job description it reads,
“Bike commuters are especially encouraged to apply.”
I love it!
You might also remember that back in November I wrote about how Laughing Planet stepped up as a big supporter of a major new bike race event that’s in the works.

yay! i can't tell you how many jobs i couldn't apply for during my job search because a car was required. luckily i found a great job that actually gives me a bonus each month for biking!
i'm also glad to hear they're moving into that building on woodstock. i've lived in the area off and on for several years, and every business that has occupied that building has been unsuccessful. here's to breaking the curse!

Gotta love the Laughing Planet! Great tasting food from local farms. Now showing the love of bikes. They're more proof that green business is for real. Oh yeah, and they make Portland a better place to live in the meantime -- how bout that.
I like the Amazin' Grace Quesadilla with tempeh myself.

I'm not sure if this is even relevant or not, but it is an honest question: Is it legal to say "Bike commuters are especially encouraged to apply" in a help wanted ad?
I ask for two reasons: One, I remember a few years back a Portland restaurant got into a little bit of hot water for encouraging tall people to apply. Two, I just took a Fair Housing class and learned that I can't even say that there's a church across the street when placing a housing ad for fear of discriminating against atheists.
Personally, I think it's great that they would encourage bike commuting, but...

I would like to especially encourage them to open a shop in the Concordia neighborhood of NE. Pehaps Alberta or the 33rd and Killingsworth area.

Well, I know I've seen plenty of job ads where it said "car required." Sometimes it says "must have own vehicle" or "reliable transportation", which is more bike-inclusive (at least until you go to the interview).
I don't know if they can claim discrimination based on what they own or do as opposed to who they are or what they believe. AO, do you know?

I've seen those ads too, Matt P., and I've always wondered about those as well.
My job requires me to be in Milwaukie twice a month, and so I made them reschedule those meetings to coincide with the bus schedule so I don't have to drive/ride all the way out there.
I think I'm probably just being too sensitive because of this litigious society we live in.

The Laughing Planet has a long history of supporting cycling. Richard Satnick opened the first one in Bloomington, Indiana as I was finshing college there (1995). I spent the summer as a full-time bike racer and half-time burrito roller and cook at the original cafe. My guess is 80% of the staff then were cyclists in some form, so it goes back quite ways. Cycling was encouraged from the outset.
The burritos always fit well into water bottle cages.
