TriMet’s shares light rail construction bike detours

Between March 2007 and spring of 2009, TriMet will be constructing the new I-205 MAX line that will connect PSU with points east to Clackamas County.
A reader just forwarded me a two-page info sheet that details the bike path detours along the 6.5 mile stretch.
You can view the map on TriMet’s website (opens to a PDF).
They also detail improvements ODOT will make to the multi-use path once the light rail line is completed. Among them is a new bridge:
“A new elevated crossing will be constructed over SE Foster Road and SE Woodstock Boulevard, increasing continuity and safety for pedestrians and bikers.”

In a related note, there is a bike ride scheduled for this Saturday, Jan. 27, that will explore the best ways to link between the existing bike route that runs east/west on Gladstone, further east to a future light rail (205) stop. Are there any plans to improve where bikes cross SE Division on that trail? I typically skip the cross-walk and go down to one of the lights and cross there. That crossing scares me.

Dennis, I seem to remember that it was scheduled to be improved as part of the Division MAX station consturction - but my memory is notoriously unreliable , and things may have changed, so you might want to check with TriMet project management -

All of those crossings are problematic. Stark St. isn't all that great either - cars don't watch for bikes when turning onto Stark and off of Washington.
This detour is going to really suck for regular users, especially those who live at the south end. Otty road, Johnson Creek and Monterey have steep inclines going up to 92nd - Otty / Idleman particularly so. (at least a 12% grade) Also, 92nd is really steep for those headed south towards Johnson Creek after passing under I-205. I'll be looking for an alternate route to Tri-Met's alternate route.

Took the "detour" for the first time today, from Flavel north. To say it sucks is to put it mildly. It is a bizarre tour of narrow streets with lots of stop signs and blind intersections. Next time I am just going to head straight up 92nd. Faster and, believe it or not, safer.
