Underground bike parking at Convention Center

Intrepid cyclists VJ Beauchamp and Heather Andrews have uncovered a little-known “underground bike parking bunker” below the Oregon Convention Center. They found it while looking for parking during last weekend’s Wordstock Festival. Here’s more from Heather:

“…the bike racks in the front (of the Convention Center) had overflowed enough that cyclists were locking to everything, including stair railings at the entrances. Just around the corner, designated bike parking for 30 or more bikes sat empty, except for one bike when I arrived.

As with all secret underground bunkers, this one has a clever disguise-it fronts as an automobile parking lot, complete with a brilliant sign near the street that says “Parking-$8.” This lot is located on NE First and Lloyd Boulevard.

Maybe if the Oregon Convention Center people see us filling this bike parking on a regular basis, they’ll be encouraged to add more.”

For more info, check out VJ’s post on her always useful site, AltPortland.com. Also check out Heather’s photos and captions.
