[Back in June 2010, southeast Portland resident Karl Moritz was involved in a horrific crash while biking on SE Ladd Ave that left him in a coma for three weeks. We’ve shared his recovery since then and posted an update — in his own words — in May of last year.

Yesterday I heard from Karl again. The man has refused to give up. Not only is he back on the bike, but he completed the recent Portland Century — riding over 100 miles in over eight hours on the saddle! Read how his recovery has progressed in the update below.]

Guest Article: Karl Moritz tells his story; from crash to recovery

Publisher’s note: Back in July 2010, southeast Portland resident Karl Moritz suffered a harrowing crash while riding through Ladd’s Addition. It remains unclear what happened in the seconds before Karl collided head-on with a car traveling in the opposition direction; but what is clear is that the crash changed his life forever. Karl sustained many severe injuries and was in a coma for three weeks.

Many people have written to us wondering what happened to Karl. We’ve kept in touch with his wife Staci, who tells us that his recovery is, “coming along well.” “The support we felt from the biking community last summer was truly amazing,” she wrote via email a few days ago. Staci also wanted to share Karl’s story, written by Karl himself. “Writing the update for your blog was important to his recovery, emotionally and psychologically,” Staci wrote us, “He worked really hard on it.”

Update on Karl Moritz: Making progress, but many unknowns

Several readers have emailed and posted in the Forums wondering how Karl Moritz is doing. Karl is the man who crashed his bike near Ladds Circle back in June. When he collided with a car traveling in the opposite direction, the impact resulted in a serious brain injury that left him in a coma. [Read more…]

It’s been just over two weeks since a crash on SE Ladd Avenue sent Portland resident Karl Moritz to the hospital with multiple fractures and a serious brain injury. Serious injury crash near Ladds Circle (photos) – Updated

There was a serious injury crash just north of Ladds Circle yesterday during the evening commute. At about 5:15, I started getting reports from witnesses about someone on a bike that was being tended to by emergency medical personnel.
