Just over a year ago, we reported that Portland-based Unitus Community Credit Union offered a bike loan. Now comes word that a second local credit union, Northwest Resource Federal Credit Union, has a similar program.

In Portland, we’re fortunate to have many local businesses and organizations that support bicycling. Free Geek, a non-profit based in Southeast Portland that recycles and sells used computers and parts, makes biking easier by selling a few accessories in their Thrift Store.
One of the items they sell is a bike light (the Knog Beetle 2). Today, an alert reader informed me that Free Geek will give everyone who buys one of them free batteries for life.
KOIN TV staffer victim of hit-and-run in Beaverton
The Beaverton Police Department reports that last night at about 11:49 pm, a man was hit by a truck on SW Hall Blvd just west of SW Scholls Ferry Road. The truck fled the scene and left 53 year old Jeff Connor laying the middle of the road.
According to Oregon Media Central (OMC), Connor is the nightside editor for KOIN television, the regional CBS affiliate station.

Once it’s built, TriMet’s Milwaukie Light Rail bridge over the Willamette River will be the first in the country to carry only light rail and people on bikes and foot (no cars).
What will the actual bike and pedestrian facilities look like?
TriMet is currently working out design details with their new architect on the project, Donald MacDonald. At a recent bridge design meeting, MacDonald unveiled some interesting drawings of what the new bridge might look like. Also, TriMet’s bridge team offered details on the project to the City’s Bicycle Advisory Committee last month.
Jeff Jahn of PortlandArt.net was at a recent design meeting and has covered the design talks closely. He says MacDonald has been touting the bridge’s bike and ped facilities as possibly being some of the best in the world.
Industry mag says “transportation bike” revolution is upon us

Bicycle Retailer and Industry News (BRAIN) has made it official: “transportation bikes” are taking the bike industry by storm.
In a story published on their website yesterday, the publication wrote that all the major players are ramping up their city bike offerings and that they are finally getting, “the acceptance and sales success that mountain bikes enjoyed in recent years.”
The article points to the new Globe brand recently launched by Specialized (it was formally just a part of their line, but it’s now a stand-alone brand) as just one of many signs that transportation bikes are hot.
Multnomah County: No more bike racing allowed at Kruger’s Farm

Multnomah County’s land use planning department has reached a decision in the permit application for Kruger’s Farm. As we reported back in June, the farm stand has hosted numerous popular bike races in the past but those events were in jeopardy after the County received a complaint that triggered an update to Kruger’s land use permit.
A decision made public today by Multnomah County Planning Director Karen Schilling, states that, “Weddings, bike races, birthday parties, corporate picnics, and group gatherings are not allowed as part of this decision.”
Kruger’s Farm Market sits on an Exclusive Farm Use zone and farm owner Don Kruger has added many activities to the land that are not agricultural in nature. One of those uses that came under scrutiny by the county were bike races.

A summer bike camp on two wheels (Slideshow)
Last Friday I spent the day with the Community Cycling Center’s “Coasters” summer bike camp.
The camp is for kids 6-8 years old and the idea is to teach them how to ride on city streets, do basic bike maintenance (very basic), build confidence, show them around the neighborhood, and of course to just have fun.
My daughter is finally old enough to join so I went along with her on the final day of the week-long camp. After gathering at the CCC on Alberta and 17th, we rolled east via N. Going Ave. The street is slated to be a major bike boulevard and it’s easy to see why. It’s plenty wide, already has low traffic, and its just one block south of Alberta. Even biking with 13 kids, several of whom were fresh from the sidewalk and the watchful eyes of parents, was stress-free.

AAA will extend roadside assistance to bicycles
The Oregon/Idaho chapter of the American Automobile Association (a.k.a. “Triple A”) is set to announce that their legendary roadside assistance plan will now cover people riding bicycles.
According to sources, the 50 million member non-profit auto lobbying group and service organization that was founded in 1902, is set to make the announcement in a press release tomorrow.
