Alice Awards recap and slideshow
About 500 people turned out in their bike-chic best last night for the Bicycle Transportation Alliance’s 15th annual fundraising gala, the Alice Awards.
In marvelous outfits (see them in the slideshow below), bike lovers from around the state rubbed shoulders with fellow activists, politicians, bureaucrats, and industry luminaries. The mood was celebratory and optimistic and the energy was directed at one purpose: to raise money for the BTA. After signing in and perusing a number of raffle options and other items up for purchase, attendees gathered outside the venue under warm clear skies to watch a performance by The Sprockettes.

I ride this bike everywhere. Whether it is to school, work, or long bike rides at the beach it gets me to where i need to be. Handles are amazing and brakes are highly responsive. Not too heavy and is flashy at the same time. It was so worth it.

I just recently bought this bike from the AWESOME guys at Performance and I couldn’t ask for a better single speed. It handles really well, it’s pretty light, and is quite comfortable, even over some more bumpy landscape.

Best Bike I’ve ever had.
By Audje from New Orleans, LA on 2/28/2010

Comments about 2009 SE Racing 700c Draft Single Speed Road Bike:
The color is what really hooked me. It’s such a classy, simple design–I love it! It’s super lightweight–I weigh 100 lbs. and I can easily carry it on my shoulder up a few flights of stairs. Surprisingly, it does very well on the pot-hole streets of New Orleans. I ride it to the grocery, downtown, and to school. It feels very safe–I don’t plan on breaking my jaw again. The seat might need to be replaced soon–for female comfort, but otherwise, I plan on using this bike for as long as it lasts. It’s a solid bike–and a bargain!

I bought this in the Downtown Portland store and for my first (adult) single speed, this was beyond my expectations. I can’t stop riding her (fnar fnar). It’s fairly light (lighter than my Trek 7000 Aluminum) and getting up some fair steep hills, it was pretty light work. Components may not be highest quality and will see how she fairs in 6 months time.

It’s an awesome starter bike. Great frame and fork set up for the price, very easy to upgrade parts for fixed gear riding and if you can get this bike as a sale item, I’d have to say it’s money well invested.
I’ve converted mine as a fixed gear, chopped the bars 4″ total, upgraded to 44t Sugino cranks, 17t fixed cog and 700c x 23 deep Vs from an old bike and presto….decent daily commuter / looker.

A fun to ride single speed, even on my commute. I’ve been riding this 2-3 days a week since July on my 8.5 mile commute with no issues. A super bargain at this price point. Only upgrades I made were new grips and a Forte seat. Fast and smooth to ride on the flats, and OK for climbing short or gradual hills. A perfect entry level single speed bike.

Comments about 2009 SE Racing 700c Draft Single Speed Road Bike:
I own some nicer bikes — a Surly LHT, for one — but I wanted a bike I could lock at a bike rack and leave for a while and not worry about. And I thought a single speed might be fun for a change. By the time I added up the cost + hassle of making a single speed out of an old steel frame, the <$200 this bike cost seemed well worth it. It rides just fine, I don't worry about anything when riding it, it's just a utility bike, and for that purpose it works perfectly.
OK, it did come with a ridiculous plastic chain guard that lasted just until I got home.
I think maybe over time I might want some nicer wheels, etc. but keep in mind that this bike's low-end components are light-years ahead of what I was riding 20 years ago, and I know any number of people single-speeding old 10-speeds.
Anyway, I'm having fun with the bike; ridden a hundred miles or so, no problems.
And — like the other reviewer — I like the color.

I've had the SE Draft for three months now and it's more than I expected at this price point. I ride this bike two or more days per week on my 8.5 mile commute and haven't had a single issue. Except for upgrading the seat and bar grips, it's 100% stock and needs nothing. The perfect choice for the first time Single Speed buyer.

(Sunny!) Weekend Open Thread
Hard to believe… but it actually feels like summer! Sun is shining bright, nice little breeze, perfect bike weather.
I was out this morning and the streets were teeming with bikes. Use this post to share your adventures, promote rides, report on events you’re at, whatever. Tonight is a big night for bike advocates with the Alice Awards (and an alternative too). Feel free to post comments about either of those events.

Stolen:2010-06-3
Stolen From: house at SW Corbett & Thomas
Neighborhood: Lair Hill/South Portland
Owner: Ellen Bellaterra B&B
OwnerEmail: bellaterrainfo@gmail.com
Reward: $25
Description: Driveway is on Thomas; bike was taken from behind a bench at the far end of a section of the driveway that doubles as a patio. I’m not sure exactly when it happened–but I think I saw it there on the 2nd, possibly the 3rd, too. It wasn’t there this morning (6/4).
I bought the bike secondhand in the early 90’s and haven’t used it much in the last 15 years–so I don’t remember the brand and can’t find any records for it.
* After looking at lists of brand names, I think the brand name might be Specialized.
* It’s a 10-speed (possibly 12) road bike
* down-bars with one set of brakes (no suicide brakes); believe brake operated with left hand works better than one on the right.
* Section of handlebars you grip is wrapped with white tape (I think beginning to come off at one end).
* Rubber around around where brakes levers attach is natural tannish color.
* On middle section of handlebars (left side, I think) is a black plastic base to attach light to.
* Has a water bottle cage.
* Black seat (regular size, not extra wide).
* Black fenders (I think they’re plastic). Rear one is raggedly broken when the rear reflector was.
* I think there’s a white reflector in front middle; also on at least one of the wheels (facing to the side).
* Has stirrups/clips with old leather straps (curling a bit).
* Has (had?) an under-seat bag with lock and plastic-wrapped silvery cable (the kind that springs into a circle about 5-6″ wide). There had also been an old, small turquoise fanny pack in there with a short wood-handled screwdriver and an allen wrench.
* Had a 2-3″ rear view mirror attached to left brake attachment.
* No kickstand, rack, or basket.

Oregon Bike Summit: Who’s here? (Part One)
In case you’re wondering who’s here at the Oregon Bike Summit, I took my camera around for a few minutes during a recent break in the action to find out…
At Oregon Bike Summit, a view of the national landscape
at the Oregon Bike Summit.

Nearly 200 bike advocates filed into the World Trade Center in downtown Portland this morning for the kickoff of the fifth annual Oregon Bike Summit. Held each year since 2006, the purpose is to knit together all the advocates, politicians, insiders, and citizen activists working on biking issues, programs and projects throughout the state.
The opening keynote this year was given by Tim Blumenthal, executive director of national non-profit, Bikes Belong. Blumenthal is the most prominent and active figure for bicycling in America. In his speech, he recapped the National Bike Summit and gave attendees a view of the national political landscape for biking.
