🚨 Please note that BikePortland slows down during this time of year as I have family in town and just need a break! Please don't expect typical volume of news stories and content. I'll be back in regular form after the new year. Thanks. - Jonathan 🙏

Letter to the Editor: Trouble in Corbett

Riding near Corbett is beautiful;
but some locals would rather you didn’t.

A recent reader email shared an important perspective from another front in the battle for bike safety on rural roads. If you thought these issues were limited to Portland’s West Hills, rural Washington County, and Sauvie Island — think again.

Below is the letter, which comes from Troutdale resident Russell K:

Are Bicycle Riders Safe in Corbett? (Or on the Old Columbia River Highway?)

I live in Troutdale, OR. One of best things about life here are the amazing bicycle rides that I can do from my front door. Troutdale being right at the mouth of the Columbia River Gorge has immediate access to rides with stunning scenery and challenging hills.

Portland’s Peacock Lane Tradition Continues

Residents plan light displays, pedestrian-only nights to accommodate Portlanders of all ages
Portland, OR, October 26, 2011: Continuing a rich tradition of holiday spirit that began in the 1920s, residents of Southeast Portland’s Peacock Lane neighborhood are looking forward to delighting thousands of passersby with their Christmas light displays again this year. Many Portland residents have been coming together to enjoy the lights displays for decades, and residents of Peacock Lane work hard every year to make it a fun tradition for all. Here’s everything you need to know about Peacock Lane this year:
Schedule

Lighting displays run from December 15th to 31st from 6 pm to 11 pm, and are open to vehicles and pedestrians with a few important exceptions:

Thursday, December 15th: PEDESTRIANS ONLY – NO VEHICLES ALLOWED
Friday, December 16th: PEDESTRIANS ONLY – NO VEHICLES ALLOWED
Saturday, December 24th: Lights on 6 pm to midnight
Saturday, December 31st: Lights on 6 pm to midnight

If you are planning a field trip for residents of a group home, please be aware that your vehicle will be turned away on pedestrian only nights. Please visit us on another night.

Cocoa Booth
Residents will again be staffing a free cocoa booth on the lane during lighting hours. Donations of cash and canned goods will be accepted at the cocoa booth and donated to charity.

The Monday Roundup

“Are you following me?”
(Google Street View)

Here’s the news that caught our eyes this past week…

New York City has designated its first residential reduced speed zone, called a neighborhood slow zone, meant to reduce the number and impact of vehicle collisions. Oregon’s 25 mph residential speed limit law goes into effect on January 1, 2012.

– After its first months in operation, Boston’s bike share program has won over the city and many former critics. Tome Keane from the Boston Globe originally thought the program was one of those “off-the-wall, goofy larks you’d find in cities like Portland, Ore.” but now says Boston’s bike share “is one of [the mayor]’s best ideas ever.”
