‘Positive Spin’: A new column for good news

A bad situation made good.

Welcome to the first post in a new series we’re calling ‘Positive Spin’.

Every now and again I get emails from readers with warm and fuzzy stories or I come across them on the various email lists I subscribe to. Recently, someone asked if there was anywhere on BikePortland where people could post good news or positive interactions they have with other people — whether it be out on the streets or otherwise. There wasn’t. So, after thinking it over and coming across what I thought would make a great opening story, here we are.

The story below was posted to the Active Right of Way (AROW, a local transportation advocacy group) email list by citizen activist Russ Willis with the subject line of “thanks, Craig”.

Clark County bike/walk plan earns national award for fighting obesity

Cover of the plan.

While Vancouver isn’t the same cycling utopia as Portland; bit by bit, the area is striving to embrace two-wheeled transportation. Those efforts just got a head nod from the Active Living Research (ALR), an organization that promotes walking and biking as means to fight childhood obesity.

In a press release, Clark County Public Health announced it received ALR’s 2012 Translating Research to Policy Award for its Health Impact Assessment (PDF) of the Clark County Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan. The annual award, given to one organization each year, recognizes exceptional use of research in making policies affecting youth physical activity levels, according to ALR Research Coordinator Chad Spoon.

The Monday Roundup

Deck the roads with
flocks of bicycles.
(Photo: Bike Noun Verb)

Here’s the news that caught our eyes this past week…

– Riding a bicycle in Los Angeles is a little bit safer now that the city has installed a bright green bike lane in downtown, a treatment made popular here in Portland. And just like Portland, L.A. is having to contend with wet weather. Moist conditions have caused the green paint in their new bike lane to dissolve in many areas.

– If you have doubts about how fun it is to ride in L.A., you should talk to Russ and Laura from The Path Less Pedaled. They took a car-free weekend vacation in Los Angeles and ended up having a great time.

– Tragically, despite how fun it is to ride in L.A., the State of California saw fatalities and injuries from motor vehicle crashes jump over the Thanksgiving weekend.
