A Metro ‘Opt-In’ survey on active transportation shows that a majority of respondents from around the region feel it’s important to make greater investments in dedicated bicycle infrastructure. The survey, which was answered by 3,865 members of the Opt-In feedback panel, was to help inform in Metro’s first ever Active Transportation Plan they’ll begin to develop next year.

Not only are they finally breaking ground on the Sellwood Bridge project, they also announced Tuesday that they received $17.7 million from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s TIGER program for the final piece of funding needed to replace the bridge.

Impressions, photos of Eugene’s new two-way cycle track

(Photos: Will Vanlue)
During a recent trip to Eugene, I had the pleasure of going for a bike ride with Shane MacRhodes, Program Manager of Eugene Safe Routes to School, and Bob Passaro, publisher of Eugene Bicyclist to see recent improvements in bicycle access around the city.
Despite seeing a lot of really great things (which I’ll share more of soon), nothing I saw was quite as impressive as the two-way cycle track near the University of Oregon.

Sharing cars and bikes: A one-two punch for low-car Portland
It’s been a big month for sharing and two new projects in the works are likely to have a major impact on how Portlanders get around.
Last week, a key Metro committee approved $2 million in federal funding that will help start up the Portland Bike Sharing project. Once fully rolled out, Portland’s bike-sharing system will likely have about 750 bikes with 74 rental kiosks — or about one every five blocks on average. The bikes will be ubiquitous in the downtown core, offering people the option of free short trips aboard a durable and easy-to-ride vehicle.
PBOT director clarifies position, says Multnomah St project could be “transformative”

two major projects in the
Lloyd District.

Back on Friday, we shared a major update on the City of Portland’s NE Holladay Street project.
Here’s a quick rewind: After a stakeholder advisory committee (SAC) spent almost a year debating, refining and compromising a proposal to vastly improve bike access on Holladay, the committee voted 12-1 in favor of moving forward with it. However, after being approached by a major business owner in the Lloyd District (the same person who voted no), the Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) decided to hold off on the Holladay project and take a look at Multnomah Street instead.

The future of downtown Tigard: Sharrows, a bike lane, and raised crosswalks

This past summer, the City of Tigard completed improvements to Burnham Street, one component of their downtown core.
Now they’re finalizing plans for Main Street (located along Highway 99, 10 miles south of downtown Portland), and by the summer of 2013 we’ll see improvements making it easier and safer to ride a bicycle in the area, including improved connections to the Fanno Creek Trail.
