Weekend Event Guide: Gateway Green opening day, Naked Bike Ride, Sunday Parkways and more

This is it folks. A huge weekend in Portland. Get your sunscreen and sun hats and get ready to roll.

Here’s our menu of must-do rides and events…

Special note: Don’t forget there are about 40 events on the Pedalpalooza calendar over the next three days. Check out the official calendar for all the details.

The Weekend Event Guide is sponsored by Abus Bike Locks. Thanks Abus!

Friday, June 23rd

No More Four-Lane Roads – 5:00 pm at Oregon Park (NE Oregon and 30th)
A protest ride led by Bike Loud PDX (who else?!) that will take over major arterials during rush-hour. Riders will be rolling, “in protest of the pavement allocation status quo” and “demanding more space for people, less space for machines!” More info here.

Good in the Hood Multicultural Festival Kickoff Party – 6:00 pm at Lillis Albina Park (N Flint and Russel)
Show up and show out! The nonprofit org behind this event received racist threats last week and the community has rallied in response to show that love is stronger than hate. Friday is the kickoff party and Saturday is the big parade. More info here.

No-Drop Road Ride – 7:00 pm at Western Bikeworks (1015 NW 17th)
Take advantage of these amazing evenings we’ve been having by riding with the Western Bikeworks crew on their weekly road ride. More info here.

Saturday, June 24th

Skull 60/120 Gravel Grind Race – All day in Harney County
If you seek a rugged adventure ride, this is the event for you. Enjoy climbs and descents of eastern Oregon’s beautiful mountains, wide-open meadows, stream crossings, and much more. Route is on BLM and US Forest Service roads. More info here.

Dirt Lab Opening at Gateway Green – 11:00 am to 4:00 pm at Gateway Green
This is it! After years of process and planning, it’s finally time to ride trails at Portland’s first-ever bike park. Two miles of expertly-crafted, cycling-only trails and a skills area will keep you entertained. Then when you’re good and tired, hang out and grab some food and drinks, watch the dirt jumpers soar, and chat with friends old and new. More info here.

World Naked Bike Ride – 8:00 pm at Fernhill Park (NE Ainsworth and 37th)
The one and only Portland edition of the worldwide display of nakedness. It will make you laugh and cry and could quite possibly restore your faith in humanity. Whatever happens, it’s an experience you won’t soon forget. More info here.

Sunday, June 25th

Three Speed Ride – 9:45 am at Woodlawn Park (under the bridge)
Join urban exploration expert Shawn Granton from the Society of Three Speeds for his annual tour on three-speed bikes. This year he’ll tour the northern regions of Portland. A “casual paced ramble” where you should be prepared for a picnic, a bit of unpaved “rough stuff”, and other fun surprises. More info here.

North Portland Sunday Parkways – 11:00 am to 4:00 pm in NoPo
It’s the 10th anniversary celebration for Sunday Parkways! This beloved Portland tradition began in north Portland in 2008 and the success of that event helped Sunday Parkways become the huge success it is today. More info here.

Kenton Cycles Shop Warming Party – 5:00 to 9:00 pm at the shop (1926 N Kilpatrick)
This great neighborhood bike shop just completed a move and they want to say thanks for your support and start off the new space with some solid community vibes. Stop in and give Rich and Ash a high-five! More info here.

Stay plugged into all the bike and transportation-related events around the region via our comprehensive event calendar.

I need to give another thought about participating in the WNBR. I guess being nekked will mean the 101 degree year will not be so bad.

Get on your bike and ride down to Union Station around 8:15am on Saturday to check out the SP 4449 leaving on an excursion to Bend for the weekend. It’s an amazing machine:
