Bike shop on Williams Ave is latest burglary victim
Metropolis Cycle Repair (2249 N Williams Ave) was broken into last night, becoming just the latest in a long and steady stream of bike shop burglaries.
According to shop owner Nathan Roll, thieves took four bikes and “a few thousand dollars in tools and merchandise.” The Police have been at the store all morning to assess the damage and document the crime.
Roll has emailed all the other shops in town to keep an eye out for the merchandise and he’s hoping the larger community will help out too. He emailed us a list of the products that were stolen:
PPB steps up bike theft awareness with new video

Watch it below.
The Portland Police Bureau has a long history of working with the community to catch bike thieves and educate folks about how to prevent bikes from being stolen in the first place. Today, with summer cycling season in full swing, they’ve released a video and a statement about bike theft prevention and recovery. The main focus of their message: Know your serial number.
“The Division has hundreds of unclaimed bikes, due to owners not knowing their serial numbers,” reads their statement, “Only 34% of bike theft victims knew their bike’s serial number last year – making it harder for police to identify the bike recovered.”
City staffers: Here’s how to use blog comments effectively
“I respectfully disagree with you on the topic of traffic signals and support the dialogue on speed limits.”
— A good opening line to a blog comment.
I say it a lot in private conversations, but perhaps not enough here on the Front Page: I believe the most valuable part of BikePortland isn’t the words and pictures we share, but the comments that appear below them. Since the early days, the comments are what have given this site its mojo and they’re what has given me the excitement and energy to keep on blogging.
I could write a book about all my blog comment thoughts and practices, and all the crazy/amazing things that have happened in our comments section. But today, I just want to share one that was written a few days ago by a City of Portland staffer. And not just any staffer, one of a select few Division Managers who actually run things and make important decisions about transportation policy and projects in our city. Peter Koonce is the Manager of PBOT’s Signals, Street Lighting, & ITS (Intelligent Transportation Systems) Division. He is not only a national leader in how to make signals work better, he also “gets it” when it comes to engaging with the public he serves (and his personal, yet work-related blog isn’t too shabby either).

CityTarget opens with bikes on billboards, but access an afterthought (UPDATED)

(Photo © J. Maus/BikePortland)
The nation’s smallest Target, which opened its doors on the west end of Portland’s downtown Wednesday, was happy to use bikes in their marketing campaign.
“I’m all for Target jumping on the bike bandwagon, but you’d think they’d put some parking in.”
— David Backes, customer
That makes sense — the store’s urban location and lack of free auto parking mean that the retail giant is banking on bikes to bring in plenty of its customers.
But making it easy to park a bike nearby? Maybe the site managers never got the memo.
Three days before its grand opening Sunday is expected to swamp the joint with bargain-hunters, bikes had already filled the three bike staples and all the sidewalk fixtures outside the new store at Southwest 10th Avenue and Morrison.

Foster Streetscape update: How many (and what type of) lanes in Lents?

Southeast Portlanders are split over how to handle a big choice for the Lents area, surrounding the intersection of 92nd Avenue and Foster Road: keep Foster at its current four standard vehicle lanes, or cut it to three in order to add bike lanes and wider sidewalks?
Or, put another way: if a redesigned Foster Road needs to transition from three to four auto lanes somewhere, should that happen east of Lents, west of it, or two blocks from the middle of its commercial area?
The project’s Stakeholder Advisory Committee meets tonight to hash it out, so we thought it was time to get you up to speed about the options and hear from a few members of the committee…
PBOT, Police stepping up enforcement of traffic laws
Last week we told you that Portland Mayor Charlie Hales was rolling up his sleeves to improve road safety. Today he and Commissioner Steve Novick teamed up with the Portland Police Bureau to launch a key component of that effort.
Hales and Novick have ordered the PPB to blanket notoriously dangerous roads with enforcement resources. This “crackdown” on dangerous road users comes after what the City describes as “An unusually high number of traffic fatalities so far this year.” “The public needs to know driver awareness can help keep the roadways safe,” reads their official statement.
