We start off our best-of-the-web recap today with several stories about car ownership and car culture…

— It seems to be getting more and more expensive to own a car. A few weeks back we shared that the annual cost of ownership had passed $10,000 (in Canada), now this week comes news that the price of gas accounts for the largest shared of household income in 30 years.

— And if that’s not enough, a study from the Texas A&M Transportation Institute found that America loses $121 billion in wasted time and fuel from sitting in traffic: That’s an average of $848 per capita (not to mention the dire environmental impacts).

— And to make matters worse, another new study has found that when you fill up at a local gas station, a whopping 66% of your cash goes to oil company coffers, “while very little of the remaining cash goes into the local economy.”

Tonight! 10th anniversary Midnight Mystery Ride

The thrill of a MMRs.

Portland’s legendary Midnight Mystery Ride is ten years old! To celebrate, there will be a special edition tonight and you’re all invited.

Known as MMR, the Midnight Mystery Rides were created by Ayleen Crotty (yes the same Ayleen that spearheaded the Multnomah County Bike Fair, Filmed by Bike, and so on) in 2003. For many years, Ayleen led the rides and maintained a website chronicling each one. The idea behind the rides is simply to get out and explore the city with friends. And it happens at midnight of course, when the city sleeps, the streets are quiet, and mysterious locations wait to be explored and cherished with friends old and new.

Cycle Oregon servers slammed, registration headaches ensue

Register! Just not all at once.

The servers handling registration for the 2013 Cycle Oregon ride collapsed shortly after people started signing up on Wednesday. Now the organization is still digging out of the snafu and they hope to have everything cleaned up by Monday.

Cycle Oregon went to online-only registration in 2012 and people clamored to sign up. They filled a record 2,000 spots in just 31 minutes. With that in mind, people wanted to make sure they didn’t get left out. Cycle Oregon used a new registration vendor this year (PreRace.com), and it seems they couldn’t handle the ride’s popularity.

Editorial: Activism for safer streets underscores larger transportation debate

“Demands for new biking, walking, transit, and other system improvements are common, but do you ever see activists clamoring for paving and street maintenance?”

Twice this week citizens of Portland have taken action to raise awareness about unsafe streets.

Benjamin Kerensa emailed us a video (watch it below) he put together of the crosswalk at NE 79th and Glisan. Kerensa witnessed a fatal collision last week involving a woman who was walking across that intersection in the sidewalk when she was hit by someone driving a car. The video, which shows numerous people failing to yield to people crossing the street, was featured on The Oregonian’s Hard Drive blog on Wednesday.

In his description of the video on YouTube, Kerensa pressured City Hall to improve the crosswalk:
