Detail of project plans.

The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) has just rolled out plans for a project that will improve biking and walking access along SW Kelly Avenue near US 26 and the western end of the Ross Island Bridge.

Along with project partners TriMet and the City of Portland, ODOT will make a host of significant changes along SW Kelly Ave., including the reduction of motor vehicle lanes, new median islands, new bike lanes, installation of rapid flash beacon, new crosswalks, a bus stop improvement, and even a new path to connect bikers and walkers to the forthcoming Gibbs Street Bridge.

ODOT project manager Robert Hopewell says they started looking at this area three years ago after getting feedback from local residents and business owners. After launching an in-depth analysis of how Kelly Ave was being used, Hopewell says, “We determined we had a facility that seemed out of date for what it’s being used for today and that we could remove a southbound lane on Kelly Ave.”

Bikes Belong has just announced that Portland has been selected as one of six “focus cities” to participate in their Green Lane Project.

The other cities that will join Portland are: Austin, Texas; Chicago, Illinois; Memphis, Tennessee; San Francisco, California; and Washington, D.C.. These cities were chosen from a pool of 42 applicants.

About the selection, project leader Martha Roskowski said via a statement, “We are delighted to be working with these forward-thinking cities. They are a range of sizes, spread across the country, and at various stages in terms of developing networks for bicycles. What they share is a strong commitment to rethinking how city streets are used and making room for bicycles.”

Incumbent Washington County Commissioner Dick Schouten has earned the endorsement of political action committee Bike Walk Vote. The announcement was made today and the organization is expected to make endorsements for Portland City Council and Metro races later this evening.

Schouten represents District 1, which includes nearly all of Beaverton as well as parts of Aloha, Cooper Mountain and Reedville. For those in transportation advocacy circles in the Portland region, this endorsement comes as no surprise. Schouten has been an outspoken advocate for bicycling, walking, and sensible transportation planning on the West Side for many years. His support of bicycling goes back over a decade: He was given an Alice Award by the Bicycle Transportation Alliance in 2001.

Catch the Paris-Roubaix — and Portland’s rising star Jacob Rathe — this Sunday at Apex Bar

The cobbles.
(Photo: Hennes Roth/Wikipedia)

Spring sports aren’t just about baseball and basketball here in Portland. It’s the classics season in the bike racing world and that means the best one-day racers (as opposed to multi-day stage races like the Tour de France) battle for glory on some of the most legendary courses in the world.

Of all the classics, Paris-Roubaix — also known as the “Hell of the North” — is perhaps the most anticipated for bike racing fans. And I think there’s a special love for this race here in Portland because of the legendary cobbles (a.k.a. “pavé”) and general muddiness and toughness of the course. It’s the closest thing to cyclocross racing in the road racing world and you all know how crazy we are for ‘cross.

As an added bonus this year, we’ll be able to root for a hometown favorite, Jacob Rathe. Rathe is the up-and-coming racer who signed a major pro contract with Garmin-Barracuda in the off-season. As pointed out by Oregon Cycling Action’s Pat Malach, Rathe is on the official Paris-Roubaix start list.

City launches ‘Every Dollar Counts’ campaign to raise money for Sunday Parkways

A ways to go before May 13th.

Sunday Parkways needs our help. Yes, the transformative, widely loved, amazing community event that has endeared itself to our city since it first happened in 2008, is getting less love from the City budget these days. That means PBOT and their presenting sponsor Kaiser Permanente are hitting the streets to ask for donations from folks like you and me.

The new, “Every Dollar Counts!” campaign is looking to raise $18,000 by the first Sunday Parkways of the season on May 13. That’s about one dollar for every person expected to attend or about 3.7% of the total budget for all five of this year’s events ($484,000).

Even though events like Sunday Parkways really do pay for themselves and are a smart City investment, this isn’t the first time PBOT has had to ask for donations to keep this event alive. However, with increased scrutiny on the Sunday Parkways budget, it feels much more urgent this time around. As you might recall, there was a dust-up in City Council over the Parkways budget back in January. City Commissioner Dan Saltzman argued that, while he likes the event, it’s not a core mission of PBOT and unless more sponsors step up, “it may need to be scaled back to fewer events.”
