East Portland metal fabricator/bike builder launches ‘Lewd Bikes’

The other day while riding home up N. Mississippi just off of Interstate Ave, something caught my eye near the new Green Garage bike shop. A banner for “Lewd Bikes” and what looked like a party going on inside. I was already late getting home, but I had to see what was going on. I’m glad I did because I ended up meeting Chris Lewis, the man behind Portland’s newest bike company, Lewd Bikes.

Lewis, 33, is a veteran metal fabricator with 15 years of experience. When he got laid off from his former job doing high-end Tig pipe welding, he decided to start a metal fabrication business. After doing custom jobs for a while, he decided to focus on a single product: “When thinking about who we are and what we know and where we live, it didn’t really take us long to decide on bicycles.”

Ideal candidates are dedicated, career cycling mechanics experienced with customer service, bicycle fitting, high-end and custom bicycle sales and service.

Being an excellent communicator, able to accept criticism, problem solve, listen to and follow instructions (from clients and co-workers), be extremely clean, detail oriented, and being a meticulously thorough mechanic are minimum requirements. A passion for bicycling and bicycle racing culture, and a friendly, non-elitist, positive attitude are a must.

This is a part-time, seasonal position with the possibility to move to full-time.

Collision on 99W outside Monmouth claims life of WOU professor – UPDATED

Monmouth resident and Western Oregon University professor, Hank Bersani, died Saturday morning when he was struck from behind while bicycling on Highway 99W.

According to the Oregon State Police, Bersani, 61, was riding northbound and was hit by 68-year-old Marvin Ford who was operating his Dodge Dakota pickup truck in the same direction. Here’s how the OSP described what happened:

“… a northbound bicyclist moved from the shoulder into the northbound lane in front of the pickup. Ford veered left in an attempt to avoid the bicyclist but the right front of the pickup struck the bicycle from behind. The bicyclist… was ejected from his road bike and came to rest near the center of the highway.”

Springwater path closure a ‘possibility’ due to erosion

Erosion of the soil beneath a 55-foot section of the Springwater multi-use path on the Willamette River just south of downtown Portland has worsened due to weekend rains and now the Portland Parks & Recreation Bureau says closure is a “possibility.”

Last week we shared that the path had been damaged by erosion and Parks had placed cones advising people to steer (and walk) clear of the edge. Apparently the plentiful weekend rains have taken a toll. This morning we received tips from two readers that the damage had worsened.

Brent L. rode past the area highlighted in our post (which is about one mile south of SE Ivon where the path begins) and says he noticed, “substantially more of the bank had fallen into the river.”

Election roundup: The Oregonian picks Hales, Brady in a car, candidate events, and more

Local elections are heading into the home stretch here in Portland (primaries are May 15th). Candidates are going to the full-court press, media coverage is picking up, and non-profit groups are hosting events to introduce you to your future leaders. Here’s an update on things from a bike/transportation perspective…

The big news is that former City Commissioner turned streetcar/light-rail consultant Charlie Hales has won the big endorsement of The Oregonian. In an editorial explaining the decision, The Oregonian cited Hales’ experience on City Council and his “record of accomplishment” on many local issues.

The City of Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) wants to start the Safe Routes to School season with a bang. This Saturday (April 7th) they’ll host a free event at Russell Academy School in northeast Portland with bike repair classes, activities for kids of all ages, free lunch, and a community bike ride.

Portland has a lot to celebrate when it comes to Safe Routes to School. With transportation safety a top priority by Mayor Sam Adams since he took over PBOT as commissioner back in 2004, the amount of Portland Public Schools involved with the Safe Routes program has skyrocketed. In recent years, PBOT’s commitment to building a network of family-friendly residential streets known as Neighborhood Greenways, has dovetailed perfectly with their Safe Routes work (Beach School in North Portland being a good example).

A chart shared at the recent Transportation Safety Summit shows how Neighborhood Greenways and Safe Routes have grown in tandem:

Here’s the news and other cool stuff that caught our eyes this past week…

– A study out of Copenhagen finds a mile traveled by bicycle is a $0.42 economic gain versus a $0.20 loss when driven in a car.

– The CRC highway expansion project continues to lumber forward despite widespread opposition and this past week gave us the first look at exactly how billions of taxpayers dollars will be spent on CRC construction over the next six years.

– Contrary to the opinion of many bicycle helmet proponents, Brtish Columbia’s mandatory helmet law has failed to noticeably reduce collision-related fatalities since it was put in place in 1996.
