Having commanded ownership of the road for decades, sharing it is an often unfamiliar and difficult idea for many motor vehicle operators. To now be required to share that space with people on bicycles is for some, rather difficult. Many people honestly believe bicycles don’t have the same legal rights to the roadway that cars do.

This conviction is fueled by a general unawareness and confusion about the rights and duties of operating a motor vehicle and it’s compounded by unpredictable and unsafe behavior of some bike riders. The potent mix of fear and entitlement on both sides of the windshield can sometimes ignite an explosion of anger; an explosion that often falls into one of three legal categories: harassment, menacing or assault.

By the end of next year, four new cycling guidebooks — two for Portland, and two for Oregon — will remedy that situation, making great routes and advice available to everyone.

Landslides, then budget keep NW Thompson closed through summer

NW Thompson Road has been closed
for nearly seven months.

A section of NW Thompson Road between Cornell and Skyline Blvd has been closed since January and Multnomah County says they still don’t know when it will re-open. This portion of Thompson is very popular for people bicycling from northwest Portland up into the West Hills because it provides a low-traffic connection to Skyline Blvd (not to mention a nice climb).

The closure came after a landslide caused by heavy winter rains threatened to erode the shoulder and one of the traffic lanes. County spokesman Mike Pullen says they don’t have the money to make needed repairs to Thompson, or an existing landslide on NW Newberry (which hasn’t resulted in a full closure).

Forest Park, Portland’s 5,000 acre urban park and wooden wonderland, might not offer the type of trail access many off-road advocates would prefer; but it’s still a great place to ride a bike.

Now, Portland-based Pedal Bike Tours is taking advantage of the park’s many miles of gravel and dirts roads by offering twice-daily guided tours.

Calling it the “ultimate Oregon combination of primeval forest and vibrant city,” Pedal Bike Tours owner Todd Roll says, “This ride appeals to both casual riders who want to enjoy the greenery and solitude of the park without a long drive to the mountains, as well as more aggressive riders looking to get a good workout on the gravel and dirt road.”

For $49 you’ll get a bike (if you need one), a lift up to Leif Erikson Road (ride starts at 600 feet) and then be led 11 miles through thick forests and ferns. The tour heads south into Portland and after rolling on dirt and gravel roads, you’ll end up just above NW 23rd Street and then wind through the Pearl District back to Pedal Bike Tours’ shop in Old Town.

City looks to promote ‘respectful traveling’ on Williams

The Portland Bureau of Transportation has announced a new twist in their North Williams Traffic Safety Operations Project — an educational campaign “to encourage safe and respectful traveling.”

The announcement was sent out via email to a list of project stakeholders. It comes just over one month after PBOT announced they would extend the project timeline in order to mollify some in the community who felt their concerns about the project were not being addressed.

Description: It was white with black lettering. It had three stickers on it. One blue and red skull with a lightning bolt in it, a white and black “New Model Army” sticker, and a purple and white sticker that said “God Bless The Freaks”. It had a front bag attached to the handlebars that carried spared tire tubes, bungy chords, and tire changing tools. It also had a rack on the back that was attached to the seat post.
