The view from my bike: 5 ways Eugene has changed in 10 years

Much has changed in
“Track Town USA”
(Photos: Will Vanlue)

Before last week I hadn’t ridden my bicycle much in Eugene since Martha Steward and Busta Rhymes appeared on TV together. I grew up in Eugene and occasionally rode my bike to school when I was younger. Unfortunately that stopped when I got my driver’s license and was caught up in the “you’re only cool if you have a car” culture of high school.

During a recent visit it was interesting to be back in the city where I grew up, but with the perspective of an outsider getting to know the city from the seat of a bicycle.

Most of what I saw were positive changes that have made the decision to ride a bike an easier one (and it’s no fluke that Eugene ranks atop the U.S. when it comes to bike commuting). Read on to see how my old hometown has changed — for the better — for bikes…

On January 1, bike traffic signals get the green light in Oregon

Expect to see more bike signals, like
this one at Broadway and Williams, in 2012.

Starting January 1st, cities throughout Oregon will get the green light on bicycle signals.

Bike-specific signals aren’t new in Portland, the City’s Bureau of Transportation has used them for years now; but technically they’ve been doing so on an experimental basis. This past legislative session, the City helped pass Senate Bill 130, which codifies bicycle signals into Oregon law and makes them official traffic control devices with as much legal weight and respect as standard signals.

Stripes in bike lane pose interesting legal question – Updated

Are these road markings legal?
(Photos: Will Vanlue)

If you’ve ridden through Tigard (about 10 miles south of downtown Portland) recently you might have seen short white stripes in front of storm drains in the vicinity of Tigard High School.

The stripes are placed in front of grates sunken a couple inches into the pavement. Dropping unexpectedly onto the grates can be jarring but usually they’re relatively safe for bicycle travel (the slots of the grates are oriented perpendicular to the direction of travel and won’t catch your bike’s tire).

The markings, installed on streets maintained by the City of Tigard, seem to be an indication the drains are a hazard to be avoided and therefore don’t meet state requirements for bike lane construction.

The Monday Roundup

Andando en Bicicleta en Cully (ABC)
will bring bike classes to NE Portland
(Image: Community Cycling Center)

Here’s the news that caught our eyes this past week…

– Gridlock is so bad in Murcia, Spain that city has offered a lifetime public transit passes in exchange for turning in your car. Instead of destroying the vehicles, the city is turning them into art installations designed to show the city’s commitment to reducing the number of cars in the city.

– The federal subsidy for driving a car to work in the US is on its way to increasing on January 1st, 2012. If Congress doesn’t take action before the end of the year, along with the bump for driving a car the federal tax benefits to public transit riders will decrease to about half its current level.

Merry Christmas, Season’s Greetings, and two rides!

Merry Christmas everyone.

If Christmas isn’t your thing, then season’s greetings and holiday cheers to you and yours.

Besides the fantastic photo above taken by Will Vanlue (the other half of the BikePortland News Team), I want to share three things with you today: A nice trend I noticed on the Oregon Bicycle Racing Association (OBRA) email list and two Christmas-themed rides.

First, the OBRA list is known as a place where you can buy almost any bike-related item you can think of. With the off-season upon us, there are tons of bikes and parts listed for sale every day. But today, in the spirit of the season, I noticed one guy posted a kids bike for free.

“I thought I would donate it to a needy little tike that wouldn’t have a bike otherwise. It might make some little ones X-Mas,” read the email.

The best part about it is that, a few minutes later, inspired by the first listing, another guy posted a free kids bike that he felt, “would be a great Christmas gift for a child in need.”

I like that trend.

And now for some rides!

Kool Yule Ride
This afternoon (12/24) is the annual “Kool Yule Ride” brought to us by the bike fun magic common to the folks from Shift. The ride meets at 5:15 at the Starbucks in the Beaumont Neighborhood on NE 47th and Fremont. Folks will bling out their rigs with tinsel and lights and then, “cruise the Alameda Ridge and check out the eye-popping festive holiday light displays.”

Day After Christmas Ride
“What better way to recover from all those Christmas festivities than with a bike ride?” says ride organizer Ryan G. Grab some friends and roll out for coffee at Bipartisan Cafe (7901 SE Stark Street) at 8:00. The ride, a 30-50 mile jaunt (depending on who shows up), will leave at 9:00 am. Ryan says the pace will be a moderate 12-15 mph and “primarily a social ride.” The route will head north to Washington on the I-205 bridge, then back into Oregon on the I-5 bridge. What happens in between… you’ll have to be there to find out!

OK, now it’s off to do some baking and cooking and hanging out with the kids and friends. Have a great holiday weekend! We’ll be back on Monday with more bike news, views, and other stuff.

An update on the Tonquin Trail project

Proposed alignment for the
Tonquin Regional Trail
(See the full map in a PDF)

Back in 2006, Metro-area voters approved a natural area bond measure which identified the Tonquin Regional Trail (a series of routes connecting Tigard, Tualatin, Sherwood, and Wilsonville) as a priority for development.

Planning kicked off in 2009 and recently the Project Steering Committee announced the recommended alignment for the trail system.

Their recommendation creates connections (at the north end of the the trail system) with the Westside Trail, Fanno Creek Trail, and Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge. Winding south from those points the Tonquin Trail continues through Sherwood and Wilsonville, ending near Champoeg State Park.

Two new committees kick off Washington County Transportation Plan update

Washington County Bicycle Transportation
Coalition, will help shape the plan.
(Photo © J. Maus/BikePortland)

Earlier this week the Washington County Board of Commissioners took a major step towards updating the county’s Transportation Plan by appointing two new committees.

One is a 22-member Interagency Coordinating Committee (ICC) representing Washington County’s local governments and service providers. The second is an 18-member Citizen Advisory Committee (CAC) which includes several familiar names. (Note: In the interest of full disclosure, I am one of the CAC members. A full list of all members appears below.)
