Non-profit’s trail-building machine, tools stolen from state park

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

Detail of flyer produced by NWTA.

The Portland-based non-profit Northwest Trail Alliance is scrambling this morning after finding out that a trailer full of trail-building equipment — including a $75,000 tractor for building singeltrack — was stolen last night.

According to the group’s president Tom Archer, the trailer was parked in the maintenance yard of Stub Stewart State Park (about 35 miles northwest of Portland near Vernonia). Archer is asking everyone to keep their eyes peeled in hopes that they can track it down.

Please be on the lookout for an 18-foot, enclosed, gray utility trailer with the “Northwest Trail Alliance” black logo and the IMBA logo on both sides of trailer (license plate of U449427).

‘Pedal Powered Talk Show’ now filming in Portland

On the set of the “Pedal Powered Talk Show”.
(Photos: Daniel Stark Photography)

Once again proving that cargo bikes can do amazing things, a new talk show is being filmed in Portland — and it’s being done entirely by bike. The table the host sits at, the chairs the guests sit in, and all the production equipment are all built into a cargo bike that was made by hand in Northeast Portland.

If you haven’t guessed by now, this project was conceived by one of the owners of Metrofiets — the same folks behind the Hopworks Beer Bike (and many other creative bike-based businesses) that garnered national headlines back in September 2009.

BikeCraft not just for Portland makers anymore

This weekend!
(Photo: Adams Carroll)

When I first held BikeCraft on that snowy evening way back in December 2005, besides an excuse to bring people together and hang out with friends, my main goal was prove the following point: “Look at all this amazing bike stuff that’s made by hand right here in Portland!”

In subsequent years I stayed mostly true to that, only allowing Portland-based vendors to participate (although last year we welcomed several from out-of-town). In the six years that have followed, I think we’ve proved the point quite well.

This year, my friends Aaron and Amos (who have taken the reins of the BikeCraft event) have lined up an impressive list of vendors from out of town. Here’s a closer look at them…
