BTA releases helmet policy, survey results

Using feedback gleaned from a recent survey, the Bicycle Transportation Alliance (BTA) board of directors has formally adopted a policy on helmets. Here is the position statement as published on their blog this morning:
The Bicycle Transportation Alliance supports state law that requires those under 16 to wear helmets while on a bicycle. Helmets are safety devices that make bicycling safer by mitigating injury in the event of a fall or crash. Our role as an advocacy organization is to push for safer cycling environments and making our roads more bike-friendly. Therefore, The Bicycle Transportation Alliance encourages the use of helmets by all cyclists.

Weekend Guide: A slate of spooky cycling
Not to be outdone by the happenings in Bend this weekend, Portland has its own slate of Halloween-inspired bike events going on.
The fun actually started this morning with the annual “Superheroes” edition of the Breakfast on the Bridges event. But if you missed that, don’t despair, there’s plenty more where that came from. Below is a quick guide to the weekend’s events:
Sunday, October 30th
Dia de los Muertos Downtown Parade
Organizers of this community parade emailed me a few days ago saying they’d love to see a bunch of people on bikes. Parade starts at 3:00 pm at SW 4th and Yamhill, but show up at Someday Lounge (125 NW 5th) between 11:00 am and 2:00 pm for sugar skull decorating, kids activities, free hot chocolate, and snacks. After the parade there will be an after party at Someday Lounge with free raffle and live mariachi music.
‘Cross, culture, and more: Bend’s big bike weekend starts today!

In case you haven’t heard, the central Oregon town of Bend has become a premiere bike town. As they proclaim on VisitBend.com, “No other town in America can boast 8 USA Cycling National Championships in 4 years!”
This weekend will only further Bend’s reputation as they host the Day of the Dead Cyclocross Festival — three days of ‘cross madness that will attract visitors from across the Pacific Northwest.

ODOT will remove unauthorized bike signage near I-5 bridge – UPDATED

(Photo: Todd Boulanger)
The new signage and markings on the paths leading up to the I-5 bridge have been hailed as a much-needed improvement. Unfortunately, since they are unauthorized, the Oregon Department of Transportation says they plan to remove them.
After getting a phone call from a reader this morning who claimed to have seen an ODOT employee in an orange vest removing the painted stencils from the paths, I called ODOT public information officer Don Hamilton for a confirmation.
