City says Portland students walk/bike more than twice national average
Here’s some good news to start off the weekend…
The Portland Bureau of Transportation announced today that more than 40 percent of students in their Safe Routes to School program walk or bike to school — which is more than twice the national average.
According to the 2009 National Household Travel Survey, the national average for kids walking and biking to school is 11 percent. PBOT also touts that the 40 percent figure is up from 31 percent since the program began counting trips back in 2006.
‘Vehicle’s only!’ stencil: Sign of a power shift on our roads?
(Photo: Adam R.)
Reader Adam R. sent me an interesting photo a few days ago. It’s a DIY stencil that’s apparently one of many painted on streets throughout Southeast Portland. It reads, “Vehicle’s Only!” and it’s written in all caps.
Grammatical slip-ups aside (bikes are vehicles too and of course there’s no apostrophe needed), one astute transportation policy and politics observer in town thinks it just might symbolize something deeper than the words themselves convey.

Washington County installs first-ever buffered bike lanes
buffered bike lanes.
Roads in Washington County are getting more bike-friendly. As I write, County crews are putting the finishing touches on three miles of buffered bike lanes on SW Tualatin Sherwood Road from SW Teton to Baler (map). The seven-foot wide lanes give people on bikes a two-foot painted buffer between them and motor vehicle traffic.
It’s the first buffered bike lane project the County has ever done, and, according bicycle and pedestrian coordinator Shelley Oylear, it’s not going to be the last.

At Eichler Park in Beaverton, a BMX/pump track is reborn (Photos)
rebuilt Eichler Bike Park.
(All photos © Tim Zimmerman)
The non-profit Northwest Trail Alliance has wrapped up work on their major renovation to the bike park in Eichler Park near downtown Beaverton (13710 SW Farmington Road).
The new design features three different “jump lines” suitable for all skill levels as well as a small pump track where riders flow through a series of whoops and berms to build momentum. The park was specifically designed for both 20-inch (kids/BMX) and 26-inch (MTB) wheeled bikes.
