Event Description: In an effort to meet the cyclist’s that ride by The Hampton Opera Center each day on the Eastbank Esplanade, Portland Opera is inviting them to stop by for a complimentary beer on our beautiful riverside patio.

Now in its third year, the popular beer & cycling event has been dubbed BIKES, BEER + BIG NIGHT this time around in honor of the upcoming 2011-2012 season-opening event, the Gala Concert Big Night celebrating opera’s most beautiful tunes.

The gathering for Eastbank Esplanade bikers takes place Friday, August 26, from 4:30pm-6:30pm. With musical highlights from beloved operas providing the atmosphere on a lovely summer evening, bike commuters will enjoy complimentary beverages provided by Widmer Brothers Brewery.

The Hampton Opera Center, situated along the Eastbank Esplanade just south of OMSI, is home to many bike commuters, including Portland Opera General Director Christopher Mattaliano and many of the Portland Opera staff.

Plenty of bike racks will be available!

Job Description
The breadth of responsibility of this position encompasses retail, production, and recycling operations. The overarching goal is to make the Bike Shop as welcoming, productive, and professional as possible. The successful candidate is an effective leader and manager, and possesses great enthusiasm for recreational and utilitarian uses of the bicycle, and for the mission and programs of the Community Cycling Center.

The Bike Shop General Manager is part of a collaborative leadership team which includes direct report managers and coordinators. The members of the team work to set and meet goals and targets respecting input from all. This position is responsible for time and quality standards for retail sales, repairs and bike production; evaluation and development of mechanic and retail sales staff; and the measurement of retail sales, repairs and production performance. In order to manage these resources, the Bike Shop General Manager will work closely with the leadership team to ensure successful operations.

General Qualifications:

• 5 years of successful managerial experience.
• Ability to strategize, to implement, and clearly communicate a vision for the Community Cycling Center Bike Shop.
• Significant professional retail experience (preferably Bike Shop experience) with a focus on delivering a high level of staff and customer satisfaction.
• Demonstrated ability to create a culture that values and respects diversity, inclusion, and teamwork.
• Strong managerial prowess and demonstrated leadership skills.
• An enthusiasm for our programs and an understanding of mission-based, nonprofit work.
• A commitment to sustainability – environmental, programmatic, and financial.
• Strong communication skills.
• Solid, confident decision maker.
• Enthusiasm for working with the public.
• Organized, analytical, high attention to detail.

Pay rate & benefits: This is a full-time permanent position with an annual salary of $35,000 – $40,000 depending on experience; new and used bicycle purchasing perks, generous PTO, and full health benefits after 30 days.

Organizers of the the wildly popular Cross Crusade cyclocross race series have announced the dates, venues, and other changes we can expect this coming season.

In a statement, Race Director Brad Ross wrote, “The Knights of the Crusade have been feverishly working to line up race locations and dates that we think will make for the most kick butt season ever.”

‘Giro di Portland’ race is new marquee event at Festa Italiana

Now includes a bike race, naturally.

The Festa Italiana, a week-long event that has brought together the local Italian community for 20 years, now includes a bike race.

The Giro di Portland will feature the area’s best racing talent on a high-speed, multi-lap criterium through the Pearl District — and the Festa Italiana is the presenting sponsor.

Festa President Joe Castellano says having a bike race as part of their event has always been a goal. “Italians love their bike races,” he shared via telephone this morning.

It was a big day at City Hall for all Portlanders who care about the myriad benefits of more bicycling and walking.

With the passage of a federal funding request with $6.6 million for three projects that will improve bicycling and walking throughout the city, and an additional $1.25 million for two projects that passed as an amendment, City Council approved nearly $8 million worth of active transportation projects today.
