Local woman launches site to sell ‘Deaf Cyclist’ patches

From DeafBikeSigns.com

Being deaf while mixing with traffic on a bike poses unique challenges.

What if you couldn’t hear the ring of the bell or the “on your left” so many of us rely on? What if the person you were passing or riding next to was Deaf? How would know? You wouldn’t. Unless of course, they had some sort of sign to make it clear.

Portlander Carrie Brewer, 31, knows this problem intimately. She is Deaf and she loves to ride bikes. When she sustained a serious injury from a crash with another rider, Carrie was inspired to do something about it. She has launched DeafBikeSigns.com to help identify those folks in the bikeway who can’t hear you.

After being made aware of a problem with garbage and recycling containers being left on the Cully Blvd cycle track, the City of Portland has decided to launch an education effort to encourage residents to keep the bikeway clear of obstructions.

In a story last week, I shared the experience of Portlander Bjorn Warloe, who was frustrated with how often the debris carts are left in the bikeway on Cully.

Celeste (Bianchi) saddle and bar tape with hard to find Celeste Look clipless pedals. Not sure if this bike is a 1998 or 2001, but think it’s the Mega Pro XL Reparto Course modeled after Pantani’s Bianchi that won him the Tour in 1998. 90% sure it’s aluminum, but could be alloy, yellow fork is definitely carbon. Campy components throughout, mostly Avanti. Think it’s a 49 cm but could be up to 51 cm.

“Bike Race”: OPB show will tackle Williams project

OPB.org screenshot

The popular Oregon Public Broadcasting radio show, Think Out Loud, will tackle PBOT’s North Williams Traffic Safety Project tomorrow.

Here’s how OPB sets up tomorrow’s one-hour discussion:

“North Williams Avenue in Portland has become a controversial street in the last few months. Currently, on the one way street, there are two lanes for cars plus a bike lane, but the bike lane often overflows as cyclists leave downtown at rush hour. The Portland Bureau of Transportation planned on transforming one of the two car lanes into a wider bike lane, but the project has been delayed. That’s because some in the historically African-American neighborhood felt that the project didn’t adequately address important issues like gentrification, equity and race.”

Bike Law 101: Harassment and how to deal with it

Bike lane in action

(Photo © J. Maus)

Having commanded ownership of the road for decades, sharing it is an often unfamiliar and difficult idea for many motor vehicle operators. To now be required to share that space with people on bicycles is for some, rather difficult. Many people honestly believe bicycles don’t have the same legal rights to the roadway that cars do.

This conviction is fueled by a general unawareness and confusion about the rights and duties of operating a motor vehicle and it’s compounded by unpredictable and unsafe behavior of some bike riders. The potent mix of fear and entitlement on both sides of the windshield can sometimes ignite an explosion of anger; an explosion that often falls into one of three legal categories: harassment, menacing or assault.
