Cemetery looks to raise $5,000 to sign safe bike route
(Photo: mumblion/Flickr)
A fundraising campaign has begun to pay for signage of a popular bike route through River View Cemetery.
People on bikes prefer the route through River View because it’s a safe and pleasant alternative from the high-speed auto traffic on Taylor’s Ferry and other major roads nearby.
Cemetery staff have voiced concerns about unsafe bike traffic through their private property for nearly four years. Back in April 2006, they threatened to prohibit bike access if more wasn’t done to curtail inconsiderate and dangerous riding.
The issue did not go away and tensions flared up again last fall after cemetery staff installed speed bumps which some riders blamed for crashes that resulted in serious injuries.

Updated: Tomorrow night: Bicycle EDition of The Ed Forman Show
Tomorrow night (Tuesday, 4/20) biking will be the focus of the The Ed Forman Show, a live comedy/talk show held weekly at Dante’s in downtown Portland (1 SW 3rd Ave). I’ll be a guest on the show along with Shift volunteer and general bike fun activist extraordinaire Meghan Sinnott and tall-biking, gravity biking, acrobalancing superstar Jon “Dutch” Paglia (whom you might have seen performing at Filmed by Bike over the weekend).
Curious about what to expect? Here’s how the Willamette Week describes the show:
How a local non-profit is breaking down biking’s color barrier
It’s been over a year since the Community Cycling Center embarked on an effort to better understand why Portland’s bike riding masses lack racial diversity.
In a story published here back in October, CCC executive director Alison Hill Graves said, “The people riding and making decisions about bicycles is a white, middle class group.”

Guest post from Rep. Earl Blumenauer: A Job Well Done
The article below is a guest post by U.S. Congressman Earl Blumenauer.
When I first came to Congress in 1996, the concept of cyclists as a powerful advocacy group was, at best, near fetched. Now, almost fifteen years later, I am constantly impressed and inspired by the bicycle community’s passion, commitment, organization and advocacy efforts.

Section of Springwater Trail re-opens: Celebration planned tonight
A section of the Springwater Trail on the Willamette River near the Sellwood Bridge that has been closed since September officially re-opens today. The Bureau of Environmental Services had been working on a sewer pipeline project that had closed the trail from SE Spokane St. to Umatilla.
To celebrate the re-opening of the trail, BES will have refreshments for trail users at SE Grand and Umatilla from 4:00 – 6:00pm tonight (4/19).
Here’s the flyer:
The Monday Roundup
Here’s the news that caught our eye this week:
– Some European airports are beginning to resume flights today, after four days during which no air travel to or from Europe was possible due to clouds of ash from an Icelandic volcano, heavily disrupting global trade, particularly in perishable goods. Some stranded travelers have found creative ways to get around, including one impromptu bicycle parade.
– In Paris, the battle against the “unacceptable hegemony of the automobile” will soon result in the removal of much of the expressway that runs along the Seine. It will be replaced with a smaller road, parks, and a botanical garden on a barge.
