FANS READY TO ROLL TO THE ROSE GARDEN FOR ANNUAL BIKE TO BLAZERS GAME

Third-annual event will pay homage to Bill Walton’s route across the Steel Bridge

PORTLAND, OR — The Trail Blazers enjoy a connection to Portland’s bike community that spans as far back as Bill Walton, perhaps the most celebrated bike enthusiast in team history.
On Wednesday, fans can be part of this Portland tradition at the third annual Bike-to-Blazers game against Golden State, riding to the game over the Steel Bridge as Walton himself often did.
Cyclists – including Portland Mayor Sam Adams, Metro councilor Rex Burkholder and Bike Portland editor Jonathan Maus, the founder of the event – will meet for a rally at the Salmon Street Fountain at McCall Waterfront Park at 5:30 p.m.

“Thousands of cyclists commute by the Rose Quarter each day,” Portland Trail Blazers President Larry Miller said. “Bike to Blazers encourages active transportation and creates a fun event for Trail Blazers fans and cyclists. Our hope is that people see biking to games as a fun, healthy alternative to driving.”

The event is in partnership with the Bicycle Transportation Alliance, BikePortland.org, Lloyd TMA, Portland Water Bureau, Metro, Community Cycling Center, Portland Bicycle Tours, and the Office of Mayor Sam Adams.

“Trail Blazers basketball and bicycling are two great Portland pastimes. I’m excited to see these two pastimes come together to create an exceptional event that will hopefully become a Portland tradition,” Mayor Adams said.

Highlights of the event will include:

    • A free prize raffle for an autographed Bill Walton helmet
    • A “dress like Bill Walton” contest
    • Community bike awareness events on the Rose Quarter Commons
    • A designated bike section for the first 100 ticket buyers, with JumboTron recognition.
    • Post game free-throw shooting for participants
    • Trail Blazers bike bells for cyclists

“Biking to Trail Blazers games is not only a fun way to get to the Rose Garden, it’s a way to enhance public health and create more livable, vibrant communities,” said Stephanie Noll of the Bicycle Transportation Alliance (BTA).”

The Trail Blazers are encouraging Portlanders to participate—even if they’re not daily bike commuters. Portland Bicycle Tours is loaning bikes to fans that want to join in the festivities, but are without a bike of their own. Those who cannot make the rally are still encouraged to bike to the game, using route planning assistance from the City of Portland and Tri-Met. Limited covered bike parking is now available at the Rose Garden.

The Bike to Blazers event follows a successful NBA Green Week partnership with the NBA and the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), during which the Trail Blazers hosted the US Green Building Council and NBA leadership to officially celebrate the Rose Garden’s LEED Gold certification, an accomplishment made possible in part because of the team’s commitment to sustainable transportation efforts.

“Being green is part of Portlanders’ DNA,” Miller said. “We want to make it easier for fans to reduce their environmental footprint with a full range of transportation options.”

Miller added that bike-friendly development will play an important role creating a more green, active and enlivened Rose Quarter.

“New amenities for cyclists and active transportation options for visitors have been at the center of our development conversations,” Miller said. “We want to make biking to the Rose Quarter a convenience, because we recognize the benefits to the environment, to public health and to adjacent neighborhoods.”

Special thanks to BikePortland.org for helping make this year’s ride the biggest yet.

PBOT: Bike boulevards now known as “neighborhood greenways”

The City of Portland Bureau of Transportation plans to change how they refer to projects that calm residential streets and put an emphasis on non-motorized traffic. The term “neighborhood greenways” will soon replace “bicycle boulevards.”

I alluded to this new term in a story last month after noticing a new title on PBOT’s main website for these projects and have since confirmed the plans with PBOT project manager Kyle Chisek. He says they will make “neighborhood greenways” the public name for the projects but that bicycle boulevard will remain the technical term because that’s how they’re referenced nationally and in the 2030 Bike Plan.

De Ronde, Portland’s toughest ride, rolls out Saturday

Tour of Flanders, Portland-Style - De Ronde-25

Portland’s infamous De Ronde van West Portland, modeled after the classic Tour of Flanders in Europe, takes off this Saturday (4/17). There’s been some confusion over whether or not the ride was even happening, so consider this post your official invitation to take part.

The men behind the ride, Hugh Givens and Brad Ross, are not officially hosting the event this year, but they’ve updated a website with a detailed route map and they still plan to meet and ride with whoever shows up.

If you want to attempt to conquer 47.5 miles of Portland’s steepest hills with Brad, Hugh, and a bunch of other masochistic psychos on a truly legendary ride, meet near the corner of NW Industrial and 31st at 10:00 am. You can view the most updated route map here.

Housing development’s bike amenities lure buyers

Daybreak Cohousing makes biking easy.
(Photo: Sally Painter)

A new housing development opening this weekend in North Portland will combine two Danish influences on our city: cohousing and biking.

On Saturday (4/17), the Daybreak Cohousing development at 2525 North Killingsworth Street will host its grand opening celebration. Daybreak is a planned community where residents own their own units and where everyone takes part in community management and share resources and spaces with one another. In 2009, Natural Home magazine named Daybreak one of the top 10 green cohousing developments in America.

The Monday Roundup

Here’s the news that caught our eye this week:

– Commuting—in car traffic at least—is the number one thing that makes U.S. Americans unhappy, according to one study.

– New Jersey, with a pedestrian fatality rate twice that of the nation as a whole, has a new law requiring that you come to a complete stop for people crossing the street, rather than just yielding; also the responsibility for any crashes is now placed on the person driving.

– A new study shows that the bulk of Oregon’s greenhouse gas emissions come not from cars and home heating, but from manufacturing and freight.

Chris Horner gets big win: You can ride with him this fall

Event flyer

Veteran pro road racer Chris Horner nabbed the biggest win of his career on Saturday, riding to victory in the final stage of Spain’s Basque Country Tour. Horner is a resident of Bend, Oregon and he’ll be in Portland his fall as official ambassador for the Echelon Grand Fondo event.

The Echelon Grand Fondo is a benefit ride that will take place on September 26th in the Columbia River Gorge. The ride is a fundraiser for the OHSU Knight Cancer Institute and Lance Armstrong’s Livestrong foundation. In addition, part of the event proceeds will go to the Friends of the Historic Columbia River highway. (You can read more about that non-profit in a BikePortland story back in 2007).

Judging by the crowds and the vibe on Saturday I’d say the Pedal Nation Bike Show has earned a solid spot on the Portland bike calendar. Hats off to co-founders Andrea Updegrave and Aaron McBride; they dove right into the community and succeeded in bringing thousands of people together through a shared love of bicycles and what they mean to this city.

Bike fashion in American is finally going way beyond spandex.

As biking takes off in big cities around the country, it’s not surprising that people want to look good doing it. They also want clothes that can stand up to the rigors of daily riding. At the Pedal Nation Bike Show, happening all this weekend at the Oregon Convention Center, there were several companies looking to fill that demand. There was also a fashion show where models on bikes showed how to put it all together.
