August 2009 site stats and top stories
Here are BikePortland’s traffic stats from the month of August, 2009. The most popular post of the month was the locally produced video entitled ‘Performance’ which, according to Youtube.com has garnered nearly three quarters of a million YouTube views in the three weeks since its initial publication on that site.
Following in popularity on BikePortland in August (counted by page views using Google Analytics) were three separate stories of conflict linked below.
Lastly, the annual Bridge Pedal recap with some excellent aerial photos by Jonathan and lots of positive event feedback in the reader comments rounded out the top five.

Police Bureau will give extra attention to cycle track

enforcement, before the lane is
this clear all the time.
(Photos © J. Maus)
Almost immediately after the thermoplastic cooled on the new cycle track on SW Broadway, reports came in that some folks were parking and driving their cars in the bike-only travel lane (one of them even ended up on the evening news).
Since the cycle track is new, this behavior is to be expected and there’s sure to be a learning curve for everyone. (Whether PBOT could have done more in terms of signage, markings, bollards, and so on, is a separate conversation.)

Raise money for watershed while biking the Springwater

The Bicycle Transportation Alliance isn’t the only local non-profit encouraging Portlanders to go by bike in the month of September. The BTA’s Bike Commute Challenge started yesterday, but so did the Springwater Cycle Stroll.
The Cycle Stroll is organized by the Johnson Creek Watershed Council. The event allows registered participants to track their miles ridden (or walked, rollerbladed, etc…) on the Springwater Trail for the month of September (the popular trail runs along Johnson Creek for many miles). The money raised will support the JCWC’s restoration, education and outreach programs.
Bike parking on the new Mall: The good, the bad, and the confusing

rack-shaped objects on the new transit
mall.
(Photos: Victoria Gilbert)
Here’s a bit of good, bad, and confusing news about bike parking on TriMet’s transit mall in downtown Portland (we’ll get to the issue of actually riding on it in a separate story).
Back in January, we reported on how stringent design guidelines that call for expensive bike racks have resulted in a major lack of bike parking.
TriMet architects, in their quest to create an aesthetically pleasing streetscape on 5th and 6th avenues, require the City to pay for silver, brushed steel racks that are much more expensive than their standard issue blue ones ($367 compared to $87). In addition, crews actually removed existing staple racks that didn’t conform to the design guidelines (including racks directly in front of the Bicycle Transportation Alliance office).
