This Sunday is the North Portland edition of the City of Portland’s Sunday Parkways event.
Compared to last year, Sunday’s event will be much larger, with two loops and over 7 miles of closed streets and organizers tell us there are also a lot more bands, food vendors, and activities planned. Most of the action will be at the three parks along the route; Kenton, Arbor Lodge and Peninsula.
If you’ve got kids, you don’t want to miss the “Youth Ready Rider” workshops at Peninsula Park. Providence Bridge Pedal has team up with the Bicycle Transportation Alliance and the City’s Safer Routes to Schools program. They’ll have loaner bikes and helmets available for everyone and they’ll teach your little ones how to become responsible and confident riders.
Bridge Pedal wants to get kids ready for their big ride in August where all kids under 15 get to ride for free. They’ll offer the workshops every hour on the hour from 9AM – 4PM. Meet at the Peninsula Park tennis courts (northeast corner at Rosa Parks and N. Kerby).
It’s also Father’s Day on Sunday, so get show up with your dad for extra bonus points! This event is a true gift to our neighborhoods so round up all your friends and let’s make it a big success.

Heh, nice impression Jonathan 🙂
I think the most fantastic thing about Sunday Parkways is how clearly it emphasizes how forbidden people usually feel from their streets, and how much they love being allowed back into them. Our public spaces should be prioritized for people, not machines.
I’ll be stationed at N. Bryant & N. Omaha from 1:30 to 4:30, at least according to the email from the volunteer coordinators at PDOT. Say hi & bring snacks! 🙂
Looking forward to this … hope the weather is okay.
If this is half as fun as last year, it will be amazing. Hands down, the most fun community activity my family was involved in last year!
Be sure to check out the bike skills area in Kenton park brought to you by the Northwest Trail Alliance! (excuse the shameless plug, but we are really excited to get people jazzed about having fun on bikes)

Thinking about the Parkways makes me upset the traffic patterns in our neighborhoods.
Instead of closing thru-street and extended curbs to calm traffic, driver seem to use smaller streets to bypass streets with bumps.
If kids and adults try to take back the street through games and play, you are normally faced with upset drivers.
Even broken bones won’t keep me away from the greatest event in Portland.
The sense of community I witnessed at last year’s Sunday Parkways was an unexpected surprise that filled me with much hope for the future of Portland.
That old metal box with wheels hides us away from our community. Events like Sunday Parkways help convince even the most car-centric folks of the social benefits of leaving the car behind.
Sunday Parkways is the best thing I have ever seen Portland do, and that’s saying a lot. If you come, you will see more people smiling than you’ve ever seen before.
Pure mirth.
Jonathan, would you be willing to put this at the top of the main page over the weekend? I wouldn’t want anyone to forget its going on!
I registered on the forum WEEKS ago and I still can not post. What’s going on?
I wanted to report a cyclist down today between NE Broadway/Weidler directly across from Muchas Gracias (7th?). I arrived right after he was taken away. His clothes were cut. Any word on condition?
BTW I am Jade_PDX on the forum if an admin/mod can authorise me to post…
See the art @ the bryant st. bridge!!!
It’s off the main route of the parkways, but if you get a chance you should bike down to Overlook as well. There is a big festival going on that is a benefit for the Oregon Food Bank. This group of people is also attempting to set an official world record for the longest kickball game at 34 hours! Stop by to enjoy the antics or make a donation.
I rode the Sunday Parkways route this afternoon and it was great. We also took in some of the kickball game @ Overlook as well. For a bunch of novice bikeriders, it was a great event. We’ll be out exploring more of PDX by bike this summer as a result. Portland rocks.
