Weekend open thread: From the Coast to Seattle, so much to do

Hottest Day of the Year Ride

The Hottest Day of the Year
Ride is sure to please.

Are bikes in your plans for the weekend? If not, you must be crazy because there loads of awesome things going on.

I’m headed out to Fort Stevens State Park with my girls (and my mom!) for the Cycle Oregon Weekend Ride. Lots of families will be there given the great bikeways at that park, it’s sure to be a good time.

Speaking of good times, New Belgium’s Tour de Fat rages on in Seattle this weekend. The Sprockettes are headed up that way in their huge, veggie-oil-powered bus to share their moves with our neighbors to the north.

They’ll be joined on their bus by a huge Portland contingent who will take part in the annual Dead Baby Downhill event and party. Unfortunately I won’t be there to continue my documentation of the bike dance revolution sweeping America. I hear yet another new group, the Bike Belles, has formed in Seattle and this weekend will be their big debut.

Sauvie Island Strawberry Ride

Precious cargo.

Back here in Portland, some folks will be taking advantage of the height of berry season with a ride out to Sauvie Island. Join Exchange Cycle Tours for their Bike to Berry Ride on Saturday and fill your panniers (and your tummy) with locally grown berries and plenty of good times.

Also tomorrow is the Red Bull Flugtag in Waterfront Park. Not a bike-specific event, but it’s sure to attract two-wheelers by the thousands. The BTA will be there to park your bike so get out and enjoy the human-powered flying contraptions and bask in the spectacle.

On Sunday, the Hottest Day of the Year Ride is sure to thrill and satisfy. I’ve been on the last two of these, and everything — from the all-you-can-eat ice cream sundae buffet, to the water fight — is always top-notch and you’re practically guaranteed a good time.

If you like garage sales, join a few friendly folks on the Garage-Saling by Bike ride. Don’t forget to pull your trailer in case a must-have item catches your eye.

What are you doing this weekend? Share your weekend adventures below and I’ll see you back here on Monday for more bike news and views…

Saw trolf\’s autocar piled high with tallbikes and minis this morning as they headed up to the Dead Baby Downhill…and I headed for work.

Boo!

Not fair!

I wanna go!

ANYway, I\’ll be here running BTA valet bike parking at RedBull Flugtag on Saturday. I could still use some volunteers (free pizza and RedBull!) if anyone\’s interested: larson@bta4bikes.org

But if you can get up to Seattle tonight for RaceDay…go! They don\’t call it \”The Greatest Party Known to Humankind\” for nothing.

Me and two friends are riding from Portland, up to Rainer, Canon Beach then down to Tillamook and back to Portland. Camping the whole way, and taking two days off work to make a 4 day tour. Hopefully this soggy weather burns off. Should be exciting.

Bike Belles has got to be the best name since Sprockettes! (although Chain Reaction rocks too)

I wish I could head north to see DBD, but this weekend has way too much stuff going on that I already committed to.

Just finished riding over the St Johns bridge, out Hwy 30, up Rocky Point Rd, over Skyline, down Mason Hill Rd (whee!), over to Logie Trail, back up to Skyline, down Logie on the east side, over on 30 to McNamee Rd, back up to Skyline, over to Newberry Rd (whee!), back down 30 and over the St Johns to home. This Drop Top Amber sure tastes good.

Flugtag is a hoot! We saw it the last time it was here – lotsa fun. There\’s a link in the story above for info. And all of the flying machines are Human Powered!

Heading over to the BTA bright and early with some friends from PSU and PCC. (9:30-11:30am, volunteering @ the BTA office, 233 NW 5th – between Everett and Davis).

Checking out Flugtag:

Then going for a 40-mile ride to prep for next weekend, when I\’m riding to into the Coast Range with friends from PSU for a week long camping/leadership trip.

And sunday, doing a long ride with PSU Cycling for fun.

Climbed Larch Mountain today with Portland Velo. I think it was about 45 degrees at the top, and seriously chilly for the first four miles of the descent. I\’m glad I brought the knee warmers and wind vest! I think I could have actioned off the knee warmers at the top for about 100 dollars. 🙂

Holy crap!

I\’m betting most folks on here don\’t watch the Lawrence Welk reruns on OPB… well, now that I\’ve blown my cover, tonights episode is about transportation, and they opened with a cute ditty while driving three-wheelers. After the number, LW came on and mentioned bikes being \”efficient, economical, and non-polluting\”.

Helped the Oregon Randonneurs Detroit-Silver Falls get underway much too early this morning. Some riders are probably still on the route.

I\’m gonna ride around and get lost. Then find my way back home so I can learn the roads better. 😛

I rode around and got lost. It was great! I will have to try that route again sometime and see if I learned anything.

Just did the Hottest Day with a friend – it was so AWESOME! I tried the slip N slide an d didn\’t get far but it was a rush. I think I have a stomach ache from the ice cream but it was worth it. looking forward to the Worst Day of the Year Ride, then another hottest. p.s. , where was the sun pre-noon? Is this ride doomed to be the anti Worst Day of the Year Ride in terms of playing tricks and twisting the weather? (Worst is always super nice, even though it is in January).

Don\’t want to brag too much, but I did my first 50 mile ride today! Went 20 miles along the Springwater Corridor trail then back downtown, then to Willamette Park and finally home again. I\’m already thinking about signing up for the Portland Half-Century ride in a few weeks 🙂

I worked and volunteered during the fun scheduled bikey fun, but yesterday evening I biked with a bunch of my friends to NE to watch Willy Wonka (original) at Unthank Park). We rocked out to the Beattles and Tally Hall on my bike stereo.

I heart Portland.

Wow…Dead Baby Downhill…Bicycle Belles…Chain Reaction…Sprockettes…BMX freestyle….357 String Band…March Fourth Marching Band…Titanium Sporkestra…freaks riding freakbikes…and, as if all that wasn\’t enough: Tour de Fat…around 300 riders on a super slow 12 mile parade with tunes…Sprockettes redux…Nanda…March Fourth redux (with hula and pole dancing)…bike/car trade…no question: PUNK ROCK LIVES! And it\’s riding a bike.
