Community Cycling Center now recycles used tires

For years, Portlanders have taken their used bikes to the Community Cycling Center (CCC). Donors can rest assured their old bikes will be lovingly restored and then re-used in a variety of social service programs or sold to raise money for the organization.

Now, the Northeast Portland-based non-profit has a tire recycling program.

The program was sparked by volunteer Drew Heithaus, who set up the partnership with his employer, Industrial Tire Services.

In an email to members the CCC wrote,

“Tires have long been a particular challenge in our recycling program – not many businesses offer tire recycling and we have not been able to afford this service in the past. Now… our tires will be reused in asphalt and athletic tracks.”

Yup. We\’re really excited. It wouldn\’t happen without Drew\’s help plus Neal and James\’ vision. Thanks, guys!

With the bicycle recycling and now tire recyling, we have dramatically reduced the waste that goes into local landfills. The tires will add up to about 2 tons of rubber!

That\’s good news. For more on the recycling theme, I just found out that Legacy Hospitals has a program for recycling bike helmets. I had to throw one out because the strap system broke.

My response is not exactly timely, but I just called Cycle Dog – a product showroom for a company that makes dog leashes, toys & collars from recycled bike tubes. They will be receiving a few years’ worth of used tubes from me!

Truely enviromental friendly and puts people back to work. At least someone has the heart and initiative to clean-up the pollution around America. Thanks Community Cycling Center.

Good afternoon,

I was looking for a place to recycle bicycle tires when I came across this post, however, I see the dates as 2008 and 2009 so I thought I would ask if this is still current information?

Thanks and remember everyday is earth day
