The Portland Development Commission (PDC) has just released a short video (below) highlighting three Portland framebuilders.
The piece was created by the PDC’s in-house audio-video guru John Cardenas as a way to highlight the agency’s work with local bike builders.
Since July of 2006, the PDC has officially recognized “bicycle-related industry” as a targeted sector of Portland’s economy. The PDC has worked specifically with local bike builders in a number of ways to help them improve their business and marketing practices.
The video features interviews with Tony Pereira of Pereira Cycles, Joseph Ahearne of Ahearne Cycles and Natalie Ramsland of Sweetpea Bicycles. It also features interviews with Port of Portland employees and footage of the newly opened exhibit of handmade bicycles at the Portland International Airport.
Watch the video below:
At last count, the Portland metro area is home to 17 bike builders and numerous other manufacturers, retailers, and professionals who rely on bicycles to do their business. A snapshot survey done in June 2006 found that bike-related industry brings a $63 million boost and 800 jobs to our regional economy.

Great to see this. Thanks for pointing it out. Unfortunately a video like that is blocked by my company\’s internet filters. I\’ll have to check it out at home tonight.
I did get a chance to check out the exhibit at the airport last week. It looks great–and is barely visible from outside security. For being behind security, it is located in a pretty prominent place, however, I wish it would have been located on the outside of security so it would have been taken in by more visitors.
Are the plans to install a video monitor to show the aforementioned video at the airport display?
To follow up on Joseph\’s comments in the video, Jennifer Nolfi from the PDC has really reached out to the framebuilding community. She facilitated meetings with industry leaders on a wide range of topics, held basic accounting classes, and coordinated the airport display just to name a few.
What really impresses me the most is that the PDC started the conversation asking \”what do you need to help grow your business\” and then continued to show up to meetings after work, after business hours, sometimes late into the night.
Great video! I\’ll crosspost soon.
I think this whole PDC program is really a fabulous use of our tax money. Really makes me proud of where I live…
PDC!
