PDOT announces Sunday Parkways open houses

Sunday Parkways meeting-1.jpg

The City of Portland is holding two public open houses for residents to learn more about their Sunday Parkways event planned for this June in North Portland.

The one-day event (which PDOT hopes to repeat if it’s successful) is an opportunity for North Portland residents to get out and be active in their own neighborhood, without traffic. The route will be a six-mile loop of traffic-tree streets in North Portland.

At the open houses, residents will be able to ask questions of PDOT staff, hear more details about the event, and enter a drawing to win a kid’s bike from Bike Gallery or a $100 gift certificate from Foot Traffic.

Transportation and neighborhood activist Chris Smith, who began his run for City Council back in September, plans to submit his 1,000th, $5 contribution to the Auditor’s office later today.

Smith, who was given the moniker “Citizen Smith” by the Portland Tribune, needs to have at least 1,000 valid contributions turned in by January 31st in order to qualify for $150,000 of public financing for his campaign.

To make sure he qualifies, Smith says he’ll shoot for 1,100 – 1,150 total contributions and will throw an “Over-the-Top” party this Sunday to help reach that goal.

Thanks to the efforts of Woodstock resident and reader Brad R., my list of Portland bike shops has been made into a handy Google Map.

Brad plotted out all the shops on my links page, and filled in the description with the little blurb I’d written for each of them.

I’ve embedded the map below (it might take a second to load) and eventually I’ll give it a more permanent home somewhere on the site. Check it out…

Eric Lundgren is a local historian currently researching a book on Portland’s bike history.

As part of that research, he has found an interesting article published by the Oregonian in 1897. The article (pasted below) shows that the sometimes rocky relationship between the police and “wheelmen” is nothing new.

Here is the article:
