This morning on the Hawthorne Bridge, the Breakfast on the Bridges crew surprised bike commuters with a special edition of their monthly tradition.
It was the annual Santa Lucia Day Breakfast on the Bridge and, like years past, Saint Lucy herself graced us with her presence.
According to Saint Lucy (a.k.a. Timo Forsberg) — who donned a lacey dress, red-ribbon belt, and a headband adorned with candles — the Saint Lucia’s Day tradition has Scandinavian roots. “Saint Lucy was a saint that brought sweets and lights to people in the catacombs…so when Breakfast on the Bridges came along, I figured ahhh! it’s a perfect way to celebrate.”
Forsberg also shared some authentic Lussekatt or Saint Lucy Buns.
On a foggy, chilly morning, the treats and hot coffee warmed up commuters. One of them shared their gratitude in an email posted to the Shift email list:
“Thank you those who volunteered and set up this morning’s BonB [Breakfast on the Bridge] and thanks to Timo just for being in a dress, a cheerful way to start the day. It was really cold this morning and there was no better way to warm up…great people, hot coffee, cold morning, and good doughnuts. Again thanks.”

I don\’t think that is St. Lucy… I clearly see eyeballs in sockets.

re: clearly seen eyeballs…

Re #2
No the focus is on the card otherwise you would be seeing a cute girl.
#2 Best. Post. Ever. Well done.
Dang! I was running late for work today and didn\’t stop to say hi. I would have loved to have met \”Santa Lucia!\” I have fond memories of \”her.\” When I was attending 6th grade back while living in Norway, this was a special day of the holiday season (songs, treats, etc.). Looks like I missed out on an opportunity to recapitulate the fun, Portland bike community-style! Thanks for being out there, guys. Brrrriiiing brrriiiing! (fyi, that was my bell as I cruised by, missing out!). 😉
no love for us Steel Bridge folk
🙁
You bastards! You could have given me a heads up; I missed it. I\’m hungry.
Steel Bridge is the forgotten step-child

I have to say, Timo\’s buns were excellent! (and I don\’t say that about just anyone)
Dear Commenters 7 & 8:
Thank you for your recent feedback about Shift\’s (Move By Bike/Calendar/Pedalpalooza/Breakfast on the Bridges) program.
We are sorry that you (couldn\’t get all your stuff moved/couldn\’t find an event on a day you wanted to ride your bike/were exhausted by too much [bike fun/PBR/donuts/sushi]/were not able to share pastry and hot drinks with us).
We endeavor to create as much bike fun as possible on an all-volunteer, all-donation basis. We value your feedback, and will work to improve our service delivery in the future.
Thank you for your comments,
Sincerely,
