New bridge design is focus of Sellwood Bridge online survey

Press Release from Multnomah County:

New bridge design is focus of Sellwood Bridge online survey

If you have an opinion about what a new Sellwood Bridge should look like, Multnomah County wants to hear from you. An online survey offered through November 28 at www.sellwoodbridge.org lets the public recommend two preferred designs for a new Sellwood Bridge. Public input will help determine which two replacement bridge types — one moderately priced and one higher priced — are studied during the draft Environmental Impact Statement phase.

The online survey includes photo simulations of six bridge types, along with information about their features, advantages and limitations. Bridge types under consideration include:

Moderately Priced
–Box girder
–Delta frame

More Expensive
–Cable Stayed
–Deck Arch
–Extradosed
–Through Arch

Bridge type options were developed by a committee of local architects, planners, historians and engineers. Input from the committee, the public, and the project’s Community Task Force will be considered by the Project Advisory Committee before
they choose two bridge types to study this December.

The public is also invited to an open house on Wednesday, November 28 from 6:00pm to 9:00 pm at Oaks Park Dance Pavilion, north of the bridge at 7100 SE Oaks Park Way. The open house will seek public input on new bridge types and share information about potential funding sources for the bridge.

“Each milestone of the Sellwood Bridge Project has benefited greatly from community members’ input and feedback,” said Commissioner Maria Rojo de Steffey. “I invite people to complete the online survey, to attend the upcoming open house and continue to share your opinions.”

Multnomah County and its project partners are in the final year of a planning project that will identify a long-term solution for the Sellwood Bridge. The planning project will conclude with selection of a preferred alternative in summer of 2008. Multnomah County maintains the Sellwood Bridge and more than 300 miles of roads and bridges.
