For the third year, a who’s-who list of regional bigwigs and policy makers from Portland and Vancouver will escape from their cubicles for an up-close look at the highs-and-lows of our regional bikeway network.

The “Visionaries Voyage” was the brainchild of Cycle Oregon founder Jonathan Nicholas and Mike Houck of the Urban Greenspaces Institute.

I was lucky enough to be invited last year and it was a memorable experience (read my report and see photos here). Highlights included riding across the I-5 bridge with Vancouver Mayor Royce Pollard, and getting to know a whole host of planners and politicians.

New Belgium’s awesome explosion of bike craziness, the Tour de Fat, is coming to Portland this August. I’ve attended the last two years of this event and it’s something you don’t want to miss.

Besides the usual downtown bike parade, live performances (including our own Sprockettes, who will be on Tour with them), freak bike rodeo, zany competitions, lots of good beer, and more, this year they’ve got something new up their sleeve.

Overlook neighborhood resident Olivia Rebanal was one of 27 Portlanders who kicked off a month on a Low-Car Diet Monday at Pioneer Courthouse Square.

The Flexcar-sponsored program aims to, “show local residents that not owning a car, or downsizing by a car, is more than possible in cities such as Portland with numerous transportation options”.

Bikes at bottom of funding priorities in Town Hall surveys

City of Portland Transportation Commissioner Sam Adams recently concluded a series of Town Hall meetings to figure out a new way fund our transportation system.

As part of the Town Halls, attendees (around 600 total) were asked to fill out a survey to gauge their priorities on a variety of transportation-related issues.
