[Thanks to Lieutenant Mark Kruger of the Portland Police Bureau Traffic Division, Anita at KATU-TV and Aaron at KGW-TV for help on this story.]
At 3:51 this afternoon 58-year-old Jerry Alvin Hinatsu (name has not been released) was killed by a hit-and-run driver in outer southeast Portland while riding the wrong-way in the bike lane.
According to Lieutenant Mark Kruger of the Portland Police Bureau Traffic Division, the crash occurred just outside of the Franz Bakery Outlet at SE 115th and SE Foster Road (map). A mid-late 90s, maroon Honda Accord pulled away from the driveway and onto SE Foster Road, colliding with the cyclist who was riding eastbound in the westbound bike lane.
The motorist they are trying to track down is allegedly a heavy-set hispanic woman with long, straight hair whose name is possibly Jen. Her license plate might include the numbers 176.
This Sunday, at 10AM several members of the Portland Bike Forums will meet up at Gateway Transit Center to clean up the I-205 bike path.
It all started with a post to the forums on April 2nd by “Oldguyonabike”,

An article published today in the Wall Street Journal (by Portland resident Nancy Keates) examines how far U.S. cities have come in their quest to emulate cycling successes in Europe and the challenges we cities face in becoming on par with world-class bike-friendly cities like Amsterdam.
The article also features a quote from Portland City Commissioner Sam Adams. Here’s the link (it will only last for 10 days):
Employees from northwest Portland-based Chris King Precision Components spoke about sustainability in front of Mayor Potter and City Council last week.
Production manager David Prause and IT manager Selena Deckelmann testified in support of a new report released by the Sustainable Development Commission titled, “PDX: The World’s Sustainability Center: A blueprint for global leadership in sustainable economic development.”
Chris King is identified by the City of Portland’s Office of Sustainable Development as belonging to the “sustainable industries cluster” and was one of over 20 businesses interviewed to help formulate recommendations presented in the Commission’s report.
Clever Cycles, Portland’s soon-to-be-opening retail shop that will carry bakfiets cargo bikes and “a complete line of resoundingly practical biking gear” is showing signs of life at their location on SE 9th Ave., just south of Hawthorne Blvd.
Part of a Dutch bike invasion sweeping North America, this shop will complete a triangle of two-wheeled revelry; it’s just a block away from the Lucky Lab and their Bike Route Rye, and The Recyclery bike shop.
