I’m having a great time with my tikit.
This little folding bike is going everywhere with me here in DC.
You might have heard of the page scandal in Washington DC recently.
Pages are 15-16 year-old high school students who run errands for House members.
Tomorrow morning, after a speech by Minnesota Congressman Jim Oberstar, Earl Blumenauer plans to re-introduce his Bike Commuter Benefits Act in a press conference on Capitol Hill.
Blumenauer just finished a speech at the opening of the National Bike Summit and he hinted at this news when he confidently said,
“With the congressional shift in Washington, It’s nice to be in a position where I can introduce legislation. The Bicycle Commuter Benefits Act will get a hearing and I think we can get it through this time.”
The Act has been around for years, but went nowhere in the old Congress.
The opening plenary is going on now.
But before I get to that, some news.
Commissioner Adams is here. I saw his badge at the registration table and a few folks have seen him walking around. He’s in DC for a meeting of the National League of Cities. I didn’t know he’d be here so this is great news. Last year, he was slated to speak at the opening but got food poisoning and did a u-turn back to Portland as soon as he arrived.
Back to the opening.
The best part of the trip so far came last night.
While waiting for our table outside the historic Old Ebbit Grill, the host came out and said,
“Bricker (as in Scott from the BTA), party of 25.”
Yes, there are 25 of us here from Oregon.
Once we got inside, Jerry Norquist — who I think has attended every National Bike Summit held — put everything into perspective. He said seven years ago, there were only three people from Oregon at the Summit.

It’s been a gorgeous day here in DC.
From the airport I did the ultimate multi-modal thing and took the bus to the Metro (subway) right into downtown.
Once I got rolling, I made my way to the hotel. The first people I bumped into were Jeff Mapes and Deb Hubsmith.
Jeff is an Oregonian reporter on leave to write a book about bicycling in American cities (he won’t let me write more about it yet).
Reader Vernon Huffman sent me a note about an interesting, cross-country bike ride leaving from Ladd Circle in southeast Portland this Saturday.
[A major note of thanks to everyone who has supported this trip. I could not do this without your help.]

It was a perfect night for a ride to the airport.
I’m a few minutes from taking off to DC and all is well. I wish I could say the same for my bike. Last time I saw it, the TSA agents were disemboweling it from its suitcase. I hope they repacked it well.
The folks at Bike Friday were kind enough to let me bring my tikit along for this trip as well. It was fun having it in San Jose and I’m looking forward to it even more in DC.
OK, boarding now. Stay tuned…
