Update on a Portland Bikestation

Bikestation is a non-profit that has helped develop secure bike parking facilities in many cities across the country. There are currently six Bikestations, one in Seattle and the others in California.

The city of Portland has discussed a potential Bikestation facility for many years. Last night I bumped into their Executive Director, 32 year-old Andrea White (photo, right). Andrea has been working to bring one to Portland for the last two years.

I asked her where things stood.

Trek President John Burke

Trek Bicycles President John Burke just gave a presentation about the challenges and opportunities faced by the bicycle industry.

Burke addressed the League of American Bicyclists’ annual meeting which was held here are the Summit.

Burke gave us a preview of a presentation he’ll give at the Taipei Bike Show in Taiwan next month. Like Al Gore in his heralded, Inconvenient Truth movie, Burke laid out a compelling case with slides and facts to make his point.

The tikit makes its Capitol Hill debut

On my way to Capitol Hill

Today we met with Congressman Peter DeFazio at the Rayburn House Office Building.

The other folks in our group took a taxi from where the Summit is taking place (which is just a mile or two down Pennsylvania Ave.). I of course hopped on the tikit and made my way over in the increasingly warm and humid DC air.

It’s quite a sensation pedaling down the middle of Pennsylvania Ave. with the Capitol in the distance. I try not to get lost in the view of that regal building because I’ve also got tour buses and DC taxi-drivers to think about. Suffice it to say I use the cool twisty grip bell on the tikit a lot.
