Cyclists smitten on Velotines Day

Velo-tines on the Bridges

[Kirsty Hall woke up at 5am to
brew coffee for bike commuters.]

This morning, commuters were welcomed into downtown Portland with smiles, pastries, patch kits, coffee and, um, condoms.

Yes, it was a special “Bike Love” edition of the monthly Breakfast on the Bridges tradition.

Cyclists were treated to specially baked cookies, bright pink signs with words of gratitude, and even helpful tips on how to show your faithful, two-wheeled steed some love. One sign read:

    Velotine Date Ideas:

  • Sponge bath
  • Tram ride
  • Sunset on Mt.Tabor
  • Fresh air in the tires
  • Reflective wrap
  • Lube job

Thanks to the stupendous volunteers on the Breakfast on the Bridges crew! You guys make us smitten for cycling.

My early-morning commute made me too early to get any rubbers, bike or otherwise, but I quite enjoyed my duck-shaped, chocolate frosted sugar cookie and my bike likes the mash note now hanging from its handlebar (and I think my bike is hot, too)! I got some nice photos of the gang setting up that someday may actually make it out of my camera card and on to my flickr account.

Thanks again, and happy St. Velotine’s Day.

I’m so bummed that those of us who commute a little earlier (~6:30) don’t get to participate. But this is great to see regardless.

Special thanks to Carl, for bringing our attention to this previously obscure holiday from the PRV (Peoples Republic of Velorutia); to Kirsty, for hosting the prep & bake party; to Emily, for being the first one to bring pink-frosted cupcakes (or anything edible, for that matter) to the Broadway; and to Rex and Lydia for being the first to break their fast with me on the B’way, and for the lovely card.

Hoping St Velotines Day brings each and every one of you sweetness, love, and smooth surfaces to roll your latex on.

I’m bummed too. The only time I go over these bridges is in the afternoon. I’ve never managed to get to a Breakfast on the Bridges – despite an estimated 750 bike commute trips in Portland / Vancouver!

How about a “Day is Done Dining” on the bridges in the evening?

not to drag out the bummed theme… but I too was disappointed that I was too early to participate… Oh well, maybe I’ll make a point of sleeping in and being late to work next year so I can participate.

On a positive note…
the Breakfast on the Bridge gang is a friendly, welcoming, and loosely-knit collective of volunteers who happen to be a bunch of late-night slackers. So take heart! There are plenty of openings for early-riser slackers who’d be willing to set up shop early. A few cups, a pump-pot of coffee, and a box of donuts and you could be in business bringing a world of happiness to a whole new crew of bike commuters who’ve never heard of B on B. You can contact the B on B crew via the website link above for more info. And happy riding!
