Last month, during my sneak peek at the new OHSU Tram, I met an avid bike commuter named Ellen Peck. Turns out that in addition to volunteering with the OHSU Bike Commuters Group, she is also an R.N. and the clinicial research coordinator for OHSU’s Trauma Department.
PDOT’s Transportation Options Division has just released an interesting comparison of survey results based on their SmartTrips program. SmartTrips — formerly known as the “Hub” project — is the name given to their annual marketing program that promotes biking, walking, and public transit in a selected geographic area.
In 2006 the target area was Northeast and in 2007 the target area is Southeast (see map at right).
Last September, a post-survey of Northeast residents and the pre-survey of Southeast residents was administered to 900 households; 300 in Northeast and 600 in Southeast.
After posting my first Salem report, BTA bike lobbyist Scott Bricker and I set off for two more meetings.
The first was with Representative Jeff Barker, a Democrat who represents Beaverton and Aloha. This meeting (as usual) would only last about 15 minutes and with three full bills to cover, Scott didn’t want to overwhelm Rep. Barker with information.
Having trouble getting a grip on all that compacted snow and ice? Here’s a super-cheap DIY solution sent in by City of Vancouver transportation planner Todd Boulanger (and originally commented on by Ian…thanks guys!):
It’s been a busy morning.
After negotiating Portland’s icy streets, BTA Policy Director Scott Bricker and I made our way down to Salem. For Scott, it was just another day at work, but for me it was an opportunity to learn more about how a bike lobbyist works the system to turn ideas for new bike laws into reality.
It’s only noon, and I’ve been on the floor of the Oregon Senate and have sat in on three productive meetings. The main priority of these meetings is for Scott to explain and get feedback on the BTA’s three bills they’re hoping to pass this session.
It’s been one year since the news broke of Randy Albright’s lawsuit against TriMet.
The story sparked a heated local dialogue, garnered national media attention and had a major impact on this site and the Portland bike community.
At the time, it was by far the biggest story I had ever covered. When it finally hit the front page of the Oregonian and the video from the on-board cameras ran on the local TV stations, it seemed the entire city was talking about it…and some very hateful words were flying between cyclists and motorists.

Woke up this morning to a winter wonderland…and it’s still falling!
Wow. Excuse the excitement, but for someone that grew up in Southern California it’s pretty amazing to bare witness to real snowfall in my own backyard.
After the girls and I took out the sled and cruised the neighborhood, I took the Puch out for a little snow-biking.
The silence and slow pace were a welcome change to the usual hectic morning traffic.
Here are a few more photos:
