Sam brings bureau leaders, budget into North Portland

PDOT Budget Town Hall - NoPo

[Commissioner Adams
led the meeting.]

Last Thursday at the Kenton Firehouse in North Portland, I attended one of Commissioner Sam’s Budget Town Hall meetings to discuss the finances and issues around transportation (PDOT), environmental services (BES), and community art (RACC). This was one of seven similar meetings being held throughout Portland’s various neighborhood districts.

Sam — who lives just a block from where we met and is the first Commissioner from North Portland since 1972 — brought his top bureau brass (Sue Keil, Director of PDOT and Dean Marriott, Director of BES) to listen and respond to issues from citizens. The meeting was a great example of how much access we have to City government. Unfortunately for North Portland, only eight people showed up.

Midnight Mystery Ride - January

The Midnight Mystery Ride began at the
Night Hawk in North Portland.
(View my entire gallery here).

Despite downright frigid temps, there was still a lot of good biking to be had over the weekend. Hey, at least the sun was shining.

My weekend got started on Friday night, when I joined about 60 other people for this month’s Midnight Mystery Ride, which was done in remembrance of veteran MMR lover Ali Al-Salman. You can check out my photo gallery and don’t miss this report from budding bike blogger Tom Rolf.

Oregonian reporter Jeff Mapes has the scoop on an interesting Portland State University study:

Jennifer Dill, an urban studies professor, wants to recruit a wide range of cyclists — and lots of them — to tote global positioning system units on their bikes for a 10-day period. She said researchers hope to learn whether cyclists go out of their way to use bike lanes and bicycle-friendly streets and to see how travel habits are affected by such factors as the weather.

[Future home of Sellwood Cyclery in Oaxaca Mex.]

Much loved local bike shop Sellwood Cyclery will open a second location this Summer in Puerto Escondido, Mexico. I just learned the news on their shop blog and called co-owner Steven Landon to find out more.

Turns out Landon owns a home in Puerto Escondido, a small town in Oaxaca province, and he plans to move down there some day. He’s already found a spot (see photo above) and will be all moved in by June.
