If you’re a bike geek, the November elections were like that Christmas when you got your very first new bike and you were brimming with excitement at the potential of good times that were sure to come. With so much bike-friendly mojo in Congress, it’s hard to not think bikes are headed for some serious political gains in the next few years.
For local cyclocross racers Molly Cameron and Erik Tonkin, the “holidays” consisted of a grueling schedule of races against the best talent in the world, thousands of miles from home. They both just returned from an action-packed trip to Belgium where they experienced all the drama and difficulty of world class bicycle racing.
Luckily for us, Molly and Erik are both great writers and they shared in-depth perspectives from the road.
Todd “Cleverchimp” Fahrner and Dean “Bakfiets” Mullin have just returned from a top secret European foray where they did some business networking and researched the inside dope on city and cargo bikes.
They’re gaining steam for their Clever Cycles business and they’re anxiously awaiting their first big shipment of Dutch bikes (see photo).

In the past I’ve covered what to do if you get hit by a car…but what if you get hit (and seriously injured) by another cyclist? This rare scenario just came in as a Close Call report from a reader named Ben Parsons:

*Wide drop handlebars
*Rack and attachment for Trail-A-Bike on seat post.
*Left rat-trap pedal on broken
*Rust on gearing so it squeaks

Got this email from a reader a few weeks back:
As bicycle advocacy and ridership in America matures, new solutions and ideas for integrating bicycles onto our roadways must be seriously considered.
For decades, we have been happy with conventional bike lanes, but as we get serious about reaching double-digit mode-splits, perhaps it’s time to go beyond a stripe of paint and consider physically separating bicycles from motor vehicle traffic.
Like two young children that, despite attempts at behavior modification just can’t seem get along, maybe it’s time we separated bikes and cars to save us all from nasty conflicts and make bike lanes safe and enjoyable for everyone.
A reader forwarded me an inspiring article from the Christian Science Monitor about a very car-conscious neighborhood in Germany.
Vauban — a new development of 2,000 homes just outside of Freiburg — has been designed to encourage car-free (I like to say “car-conscious”) living.
