Reactions and thoughts on Eurobike Portland

“I know that the point may be to shut down Interbike, but let’s be realistic, it isn’t going to happen in a year or two or even five. What happens in the mean time?”

Reactions to yesterday’s big news that Eurobike boss (and Hood River resident) Erich Reiss plans to launch a major US bike industry trade show in Portland this September (which I’ll call “Eurobike Portland” until an official name surfaces) has quickly spread around the bike biz and the web.

As I’ve talked to people involved (still waiting to hear from Reiss) and read reports on blogs and bike news outlets, reactions have ranged from shock, surprise, confusion, excitement and concern.

[Don Walker, the
man behind NAHBS]

The recent announcement that a major bike industry trade show will come to Portland next year has put a wrench in ongoing efforts by the PDC and Commissioner Sam Adams’ office to woo the popular North American Handmade Bicycle Show (NAHBS) to Stumptown.

Don Walker, the man behind the NAHBS, told me in a phone conversation this morning that he was “heartbroken” when he heard the news.

“It breaks my heart because I saw the potential of Portland hosting the show…right down to the bar where the band would play and the hotel I would stay in.”

New location for Seven Corners Cycles

Word on the street is that Seven Corners Cycles has moved from 2314 SE Division to a much a larger space at 3218 SE 21st (near People’s Food Co-op).

Long-time customer Aaron Tarfman stopped by to check out the new space and chat with shop owner Corey Cartwright:

“He’s got three times the space and a huge amount of daylight…he’s thrilled with his new spot. There’s plenty of space for more bikes and Corey’s warm-hearted smile greets each and every customer. I’ve long been a fan of Corey both because he’s so amicable, but he has also been very supportive of the Community Exchange Bike School.

Wow. Check this out…

From Bicycle Retailer & Industry News:

“The organizers of Eurobike, Germany’s premier trade show, will launch a competing event in Portland, Oregon, next September challenging Interbike’s long dominance as the only show in the U.S. market. Messe Friedrichshafen, Eurobike’s owners, have met with Portland officials who will support efforts to bring retailers and exhibitors to the West Coast city.

Kegs and costumes make for a crazy cross weekend

Cross Crusade #4

Yesterday the Cross Crusade Series continued its march toward mayhem with a fantastic race out at Flying M Ranch in Yamhill. It was my first time at this annual party that calls itself a cyclocross race and it more than lived up to its reputation.

The beer flowed and the hilarious costumes showed that Portland’s ‘cross scene is really all about having fun. Brad Ross and the Crusade crew put their courses not just near the spectator area, but directly through them. The result are races that are just as fun to watch as they are to race…especially when there’s a keg in every corner.

How was your weekend?

People's Ride

[People’s Ride in
Southeast]

It might be Fall but I’ve got to say this that last weekend was so festive it reminded me of Summer. There were tons of opportunities to dress-up, ride and have fun on bikes.

Some folks got an early start on the weekend at the annual Superhero-themed Breakfast on the Bridges. Check out Carye Bye’s great photos of the action.

Later on Friday was the traditionally spooky Critical Mass ride as well as a new ride this year, the People’s Ride. I joined the People’s Ride at Ladd’s Circle Park and we rode all over Southeast before meeting up with the Critical Mass group amidst hoops, hollers and flashing lights under the Hawthorne Bridge.
