New Year’s Day ride round-up

Portland bikers, consider yourselves spoiled with bike fun. Here is a round-up of rides happening on the first day of 2006 (if you know of others, feel free to add them to the comments):

For the family:

BTA New Year’s Day Ride.

With more than 50 years of history in Portland, this ride is Portland classic! The 2-3 mile ride is free, family-friendly, and culminates with warm drinks and sweet treats at the dance studio in Laurelhurst Park.

Sunday, January 1
12:00 PM ride start
Battleship Oregon Memorial, Tom McCall Park, Portland, between the Morrison and
Burnside bridges

For more information, contact BTA Board Member John Bloss at jjbpdx@netscape.net
or 503-710-1744.

For the hardy:

PWTC New Year’s Day Ride

Sunday, January 1, 10:00 am
Laurelhurst Park, two blocks west of SE 39th on Ankeny

Ride with the PWTC on a tour around Portland to Waterfront Park. Then it’s back to Laurelhurst Park for hot cider, cookies and camaraderie. Distance 15 – 20 miles. Group ride. Level B. www.pwtc.com

For the fun of it:

GravelTech New Year’s Day Poker Ride

Sunday, January 1, 3:00 pm

Eastside Esplanade just north of the Hawthorne Bridge
After the last poker ride went so well, GravelTech is pleased to announce the New Year’s Day Poker Ride. This is a group ride/pub crawl stopping at four bars. Riders are dealt a card at each stop along the way. We’re changing the rules a little to mix things up. The basic idea is that by the last stop you’ll have to find another rider with a hand that compliments yours, combine cards, and make the best hand possible. The pair with the best hand wins the pot. The buy-in is $3. For that you’ll receive one playing card, one can of cheap beer, and one spoke card.

i believe i will be sacrificing sleep(i work from 11:45 new years eve to 10:15 new years’ day, and repeat it that night)to go to the poker ride. The last one sounded like a lot of fun.

it’ll be 10x more fun when you’re that sleep deprived. you won’t even need to buy beers 😉

Wish I could go, but then again, I like to get muddy in the park. I stil say you should have the ride come through the park at 20th and Belmont.
Maybe give up a card if they play a game of polo?
