In January 2006 the City of Portland will begin installation of 4 “bike oases” structures on Hawthorne Blvd (see photo). The oases are being designed by Rick Browning of Browning Shono Architects and will likely be placed at SE Elliott, SE 36th, Ave, SE 38th Ave, and SE 48th Aves on Hawthorne Blvd.
According to the manager of the project:
“Each Bike Oasis will have space for ten bikes. In the information panel, PDOT plans to install bike maps and information on the side facing the bike racks, and walking maps and information on the side facing the sidewalk. “
These exciting new bicycle facilities are part of the Hawthorne Boulevard Project which seeks “to create a public environment and transportation system that supports Hawthorne’s role as a vital neighborhood main street”.

This is an exciting development. I live in S Tabor and Hawthorne is my favorite walking route to downtown. I hope this means something will finally be done to make Hawthorne more bike friendly. It is pretty scary as it is. I would love to see that street reworked down to 2 lanes with back-in angle parking, a streetcar, wider sidewalks, trees, and of course safe biking, too. (I know, a fantasy.) It would be great to feel safe biking along Hawthorne.

I agree with Michaels post. I live off Hawthorne and ride that street regularly. Im super excited about the ‘Bike Oases’, and my excitement would be volcanic if I heard news about bike lanes on Hawthorne. It seems like a logical next move for the city/neighborhood because of the ridership in the area.

I don’t understand why these ‘oasis’ are going up on Hawthorne, given that business leaders have stupidly clung to onstreet parking thus preventing bike lanes. This was a major loss for our city (BTA fought well for us).
I also wonder, based on the design, how the pamphlets will be kept dry.
